Write a case study of a business organization of your choice. Use theory and concepts from the course to analyse and explain the behavioural factors behind the success or failure of your organization. Please offer recommendations for how the organization should/could have managed the behavioural factors you identify more effectively – i.e., mitigated/avoided failure, or sustained/enhanced their success
Focus of the case study
The starting assumption for this course is that a set of behavioural forces ultimately underpins how a firm responds to strategic issues. Accordingly, your case study should focus on the behavioural aspects of the challenge you choose; that is, how the cognitions, emotions, and social interactions of individuals and groups (i.e. managers, executives and management teams) enable and/or constrain the firm’s response to the challenge. Consider some examples (we will consider others in the lectures and workshops): whether a firm harnesses a new technology depends on how its managers interpret that technology. Managers’ mental models and subjective perceptions of rivalry shape reactions to competition. Overconfidence may influence investment decisions. The success of mergers and acquisitions depends on identity and cultural fit, as well as economic synergies. Your case should focus on such behavioural underpinnings to explain the origins of and reasons for the firm’s strategic activities.
