• Research indicates that being late in developing physically is particularly difficult for boys during middle childhood and adolescence. Late developing boys tend to be smaller, less muscular, and less traditionally athletic than earlier developing boys. This puts them at a great disadvantage because sports are an important aspect of defining themselves and their adolescent experience. In regard to girls, eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder could also develop during these ages. The difficulty both boys and girls experience during this period can have lasting effects on self-esteem well into adulthood. Again, this result indicates the critical role that body image plays in the development of our self-esteem and our self-evaluations. How has US society become so body oriented? How does sexuality play a role? Please be sure to use at least 2 points from our reading to support your statements. • In thinking about our reading about developmental stages please reflect upon previous popular culture (e.g., movies like Bye Bye Birdie, Rebel without a Cause, The Blackboard Jungle, Dragstrip Girl, Grease, Sixteen Candles, etc.), TV series (e.g., Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best, What’s Happening, Gidget, Hannah Montana, and The Donna Reed Show), scholarly studies, or even feel free to conduct your own interviews with an elderly person to help gather more information. One hundred years ago, adolescence was not thought of as a specific stage; people went from being children to being young adults. How has the nature of adolescence changed over the past 100 years? How has this change in thinking impacted adolescents as well as society overall? How have the theories we are studying reflected this change? Please be sure to use examples to support your ideas. • Please identify and describe at least 1 theory we are studying in this unit that impacts the concepts of self- image during adolescence. How does the theory help explain an adolescent’s self-perception (e.g. center of attention) as well as contribute to potentially dangerous behaviors? (ie.. sexual behavior, smoking). Please provide a recent news article to share with the class in regard to self-image, perception, or/and risky behavior and explain in detail how it demonstrates the concepts of the theory you selected. Please be sure to use examples to support your ideas.
