Quote Sandwich
Due Date: Wednesday, 11:59 p.m. PST
Points: 30
Purpose:
This activity will help you practice the academic discourse pattern of framing direct quotations, one of the most common and necessary skills in academic writing.
Task:
If you have not already, please complete the Lesson 2 Reading before starting this assignment.
In the “Highlight and Respond” assignment, we chose quotes and responded to them as a way to help generate ideas. Then, we practiced summarizing and paraphrasing in the “They Say: Effective Summary and Paraphrase” assignment. By now, you have a much better sense of your exact argument. Revisit your sources and re-highlight what quotes you now think are vital to your argument. Then choose 3 quotes from any of your sources, including those you used for the Mini Annotated Bibliography if you wish, to support your argument.
When selecting quotes, consider how vital the quote is to your argument and whether the quote would be better paraphrased instead. A good time to quote is when the author uses such exact language that a paraphrase would lead to inaccuracies, or when you want to focus on the specific words the author uses because you want to agree or disagree with the word choice or make a nuanced point.
Frame your quotes using the “quote sandwich” principle. For a visual summary of the quote sandwich, scroll down to the bottom of this assignment.
OPTIONAL: Color code the three parts of your quote sandwich (introduction to quote, quote, explanation of quote).
