project:Navigating Diversity: Exploring the Intersection of Working Motherhood in Virtual Spaces
Project Title: Navigating Diversity: Exploring the Intersection of Working Motherhood in Virtual
Spaces
Objective: The objective of this project is to explore the interface of women in the workplace and the additional duties and tasks imposed upon them, examining their effects on career trajectories and well-being. This exploration will focus specifically on topics related to working mothers.
Topic to be Explored: Women in the workplace, with a particular emphasis on the interface between women and the additional responsibilities they face, and the resulting impact on their careers and well-being. Topics may include (but are not limited to):
balancing career and family obligations,
childcare challenges in the workplace,
navigating career advancement and parenthood, the burden of dual tasks (Analyze the phenomenon of “dual tasks” experienced by working mothers, who often juggle career responsibilities alongside household chores, caregiving duties, and emotional labor),
economic impact of childcare for working mothers,
addressing stigma and stereotypes,
identity and working mothers (Analyze the impact of motherhood on women’s professional identities and career trajectories, considering factors such as self-perception, societal expectations, and organizational culture) and related themes.
1. Selection of Virtual Spaces: choose one or more online platforms, forums, social media groups, or virtual communities where they actively participate or observe. These spaces could include social media platforms (e.g., X (Twitter), Reddit, Facebook groups), online forums (e.g., Reddit communities), gaming communities, or any other virtual environments.
2. Observation and Documentation: Over a designated period (from the second week of April until the end of April, spanning 3 weeks), students will actively seek, observe, and document various aspects of the aforementioned topics within their chosen virtual spaces. They will focus on identifying discussions, experiences, and interactions related to the specified themes, capturing relevant content and insights.
3. Data Collection: collect data through reading, observations, screenshots, quotes, and interactions within their chosen online spaces. They should also keep a journal or log to record their observations, reflections, and any noteworthy insights or patterns they identify. All data must have a link provided. For example: I provide the link to make sure to document where I found it: https://www.reddit.com/r/unitedkingdom/comments/11lric6/twothirds_of_women_say_childcare_duties_affected/
2. In the comments section, I see this highly interesting response that shows how working from home includes so many more responsibilities that need to be done.
3.Then in the third step, upon searching google scholar https://scholar.google.com with keywords “work from home” “child*” “duties” I found this paper interesting and read it. I click on cite, and note it: Bernhardt, J., Recksiedler, C., & Linberg, A. (2023). Work from home and parenting: Examining the role of work?family conflict and gender during the COVID?19 pandemic. Journal of social issues, 79(3), 935-970.
This is the information I expect in the appendix. In the report itself, you don’t need to provide this, but rather the discussion of the topic itself.
4. Analysis and Synthesis: After the observation period, students analyze the collected data to identify common themes, trends, and patterns related to working mothers within their respective virtual environments. Key questions to explore include:
§Work-Life Balance Challenges: What are the predominant challenges faced by working mothers in balancing their professional responsibilities with family obligations? How do discussions within the virtual spaces reflect these challenges, and are there any strategies or resources shared for managing work-life balance?
§Childcare and Family Support: What discussions or resources are available within the virtual environments regarding childcare options, family support networks, and parental leave policies? How do working mothers navigate childcare responsibilities and seek support within these online communities?
§Intersectional Experiences: How do experiences of working motherhood vary based on intersecting identities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geographic location? Are there discussions or resources addressing the unique challenges faced by marginalized groups of working mothers?
4.2. How does your analysis relate to what the scholarly discourse says about this topic? I provide you with some papers about this topic on Canvas. Read them, and find additional ones to supplement your own data. Make sure to cite them properly https://libguides.sfsu.edu/citing
Pro tip: The best way to look for additional data is by looking through (a) the references and (b) who cited the paper on google scholar.
5. Presentation and Discussion: The students prepare a comprehensive report summarizing their findings, analysis, and reflections. It includes observations and insights from their selected virtual spaces, highlighting key points related to diversity. The report includes a discussion where they compare and contrast their observations, identify commonalities and differences, and discuss the implications of their findings.
