In leading a team consisting of an LPN/LVN, a nursing assistant, and a unit clerical person, I would tailor my leadership style to suit each individual’s characteristics and the demands of the situation. Recognizing the LPN/LVN’s seasoned expertise and reliability, I would adopt a democratic or participative leadership approach with them. This style would involve collaborating closely, seeking their input, and involving them in decision-making processes. By empowering them in this way, I aim to enhance their sense of ownership and motivation, ultimately leading to improved job satisfaction and performance. However, I would retain the authority to intervene when necessary, particularly in critical scenarios or when specific protocols must be followed (Northouse, 2018).
Conversely, with the nursing assistant, who is described as new and somewhat disorganized but willing to learn, I would initially employ a more authoritative leadership style. Providing clear direction, setting expectations, and offering guidance would be essential in helping them establish structure and clarity in their role (Marquis & Huston, 2017). As they gain experience and confidence, I would gradually transition towards a more democratic leadership approach, encouraging autonomy and initiative while still providing necessary support and guidance.
For the unit clerical person, who shares their services with other team leaders and the charge nurse, I would aim for a balanced leadership style that combines authoritative direction with democratic involvement. Clear instructions and expectations would be provided, while also allowing autonomy and involvement in decision-making processes to promote efficiency and teamwork. Effective communication and coordination among team leaders would be crucial in ensuring tasks are prioritized and completed promptly (Marquis & Huston, 2017).
In the event of an emergency, I would be prepared to adapt my leadership style to the urgency and complexity of the situation. A more directive or authoritative approach may be necessary to ensure swift action, clear communication, and adherence to established protocols. However, I would strive to maintain open communication channels and involve team members in decision-making to the extent possible, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment even in challenging circumstances. Flexibility in leadership style is essential for effectively managing both routine tasks and unexpected challenges in a healthcare setting.
