Nurses play a vital role in healthcare, yet their participation in shaping health policies at state, national, or organizational levels faces several barriers. One significant obstacle is the hierarchical structure within healthcare organizations, where decision-making power often rests with higher-ranking administrators and policymakers rather than frontline nurses. This hierarchical barrier can prevent nurses from effectively voicing their perspectives and experiences in policy development processes. Moreover, time constraints pose another challenge for nurses. Their demanding work schedules leave limited time for engagement in policy advocacy or participation in policy development activities. Nurses often prioritize patient care responsibilities over engaging in policy discussions, despite their valuable insights and expertise. Furthermore, limited education and training in health policy can hinder nurses’ confidence and ability to actively contribute to policy discussions. Unlike other healthcare professionals, nurses may not receive formal education or training in health policy, limiting their understanding of policy processes and their capacity to engage meaningfully in policy development. These barriers persist due to systemic factors that undervalue the role of nurses in policymaking and fail to recognize the unique perspectives they offer. To overcome these barriers, healthcare organizations and policymakers must actively promote a culture of inclusivity, provide opportunities for education and training in health policy, and create mechanisms for meaningful nurse participation in policy development processes. By recognizing and addressing these barriers, we can harness the expertise of nurses to inform and shape healthcare policies that better reflect the needs of patients and communities. A chance exists to boost the involvement of national nurse leaders in shaping health policies. These leaders play a crucial role in guiding, encouraging, and nurturing the next generation of nurse policymakers (Shariff, 2014)
