This activity will introduce you to writing tutor resources available to you as an Ivy Tech student. You will receive writing tutor feedback on your half draft of Writing Project 2: Comparative Analysis so that you can practice using such feedback to revise your writing and you will write a reflection on your experience with your writing tutor.
What you will need for this activity:
The Little Seagull Handbook (go to Norton Ebooks & Student Support and click on “The Little Seagull Handbook, 4th Edition, EBOOK.”)
Your half draft of Writing Project 2: Comparative Analysis
Feedback from your instructor on your previous drafts (such as the final draft of Writing Project 1 or the half draft of Writing Project 2)
The Tutor.com link (found in the course navigation menu to the left) OR Ivy Tech Tutoring Centers by Campus (https://sites.google.com/ivytech.edu/ivy-tech-courses-by-campusLinks to an external site.).
What Do You Want to Focus on in Your Writing Tutor Appointment?
Before visiting with your writing tutor, identify 2 issues you’d like help with regarding your writing skills in general and/or your draft of Writing Project 2 specifically. As you come up with these 2 issues, consider the following:
Your own understanding of your strengths and areas for improvement as a writer.
Feedback you’ve received so far on your writing (such as on the final draft of Writing Project 1 or the half draft of Writing Project 2).
Guidance on writing found in The Little Seagull Handbook (in Norton Ebooks & Student Support), especially in the following sections:
WRITE, with special attention to chapters W-5 “Developing Paragraphs”, as well as W-1 “Rhetorical Contexts” and W-2 “Academic Contexts.”
RESEARCH, with special attention to chapters “MLA Style” or “APA style” (as specified by your instructor).
EDIT, with special attention to chapters S-2 “Fragments”; S-3 “Comma Splices, Fused Sentences”; S-5 “Subject/Verb Agreement”; L-1 “Appropriate Words”; L-4 “Words Often Confused”; and L-6 “Unnecessary Words.”
Choose a Writing Center and Meet with a Tutor
For this assignment, you may choose from two different options for visiting a writing tutor. Select one of the following options, either the Tutoring Center for your local Ivy Tech campus or Tutor.com. Then follow the directions below for the option you choose.
Local Ivy Tech Tutoring Center
A writing tutor at your local Ivy Tech Tutoring Center will be available by appointment and may be available to meet in person or online, depending on the services available at the campus. As Ivy Tech staff, these writing tutors will be more attuned to the needs of Ivy Tech students and the kinds of writing they do in their classes. However, you may need to plan ahead to schedule appointment and may be limited to meeting during certain hours only.
STEPS TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A LOCAL IVY TECH WRITING TUTOR
Before starting to set an appointment with a local Ivy Tech writing tutor, have a copy of your Writing Project 2 Half Draft ready in case you are asked to submit it as part of the appointment process.
Go to Tutoring Centers by Campus.Links to an external site.
Click the link for your local Ivy Tech campus.
Use the steps, instructions, or contact information provided for your local Ivy Tech campus to schedule an appointment with a writing tutor.
Follow up on any instructions you receive on how to prepare for your visit with your writing tutor.
Attend your writing tutor appointment via the medium you selected (EX: on campus visit, Zoom, etc.). Also…
Bring a copy of your Writing Project 2 Half Draft with you or have it ready to open for your writing tutor to look at.
Let your writing tutor know about the 2 writing issues you’d like to work on with them.
Examples: “I’d like more help improving my thesis statement and topic sentences”; “I want to work on my introductory paragraph and in-text citations”; “I need help with revising sentence fragments and comma splices on this draft.”
Ask questions to be sure you have a good understanding of how to revise your draft.
At the end of your visit, request a confirmation email of your completed visit, a copy of your draft marked up by your writing tutor, or some other proof that you have completed the writing tutor appointment. (You will need to submit this as part of this assignment as evidence that you completed a writing tutor appointment.)
Don’t forget to thank your tutor!
Tutor.com
Tutor.com provides live one-on-one online writing tutor help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The writing tutors at Tutor.com may be less attuned to the needs of Ivy Tech students and the kinds of writing they are assigned but are available at any time online without an appointment. You can communicate with them online via choice or chat.
STEPS TO USE TUTOR.COM
Before starting your Tutor.com session, save a new version of your Writing Project 2 Half Draft with your name and any identifying marks removed (such as the instructor’s name), if necessary. This may mean removing an MLA or APA header. Note that this is a requirement for Tutor.com. (For example, you could resave your file as “WP2 Draft for Tutor” after removing the headers or other identifying information). No need to do this if you haven’t added any headers or your name yet!
Go to the link “Tutor.com 24/7 FREE Online Tutoring,” in the course navigation menu.

Under “Enter Your Question,” describe the 2 issues you would like help with on your draft.
Examples: “I’d like more help improving my thesis statement and topic sentences”; “I want to work on my introductory paragraph and in-text citations”; “I need help with revising sentence fragments and comma splices on this draft.”

Attend your writing tutor appointment.
The tutor will look at your draft and chat with you in a chat window or via voice-chat about your questions.
Ask questions to be sure you have a good understanding of how to revise your draft.
NOTE: For this activity, keep the focus on your 2 writing issues that you described. (You can come back later for another session on other issues.)
Don’t forget to thank your tutor at the end of the appointment!
The tutor will send you a link to your updated file (your draft with the writing tutor’s feedback) in the chat box–be sure to click this link to receive your file before you end the session. This can be submitted as confirmation that you completed a visit with a Tutor.com writing tutor.
After you end the session, select the option to email a copy of the transcript to yourself (recommended). This transcript link can be submitted as confirmation that you completed a visit with a Tutor.com writing tutor. [Note: It may take up to 24 hours before you receive the email with the transcript, so please be patient. The email will come to your @ivytech.edu account.]
Your Writing Tutor Reflection
Next, write a reflection on your experience receiving feedback from the online tutor.
FIRST, identify whether you met with a local Ivy Tech writing tutor or a writing tutor at Tutor.com.
Then, write a brief paragraph summarizing the session.
After that, answer as many of the following questions as appropriate:
What worked well?
What could have worked better?
Which specific writing issues did you ask for help with? Why did you pick those specific issues?
Did the tutor address the specific concerns you asked about? Was the feedback helpful?
Did the tutor provide any helpful feedback aside from the issues that concerned you?
Overall, what did you learn?
How do you intend to improve your final draft based on this session? (Provide specific examples of changes you will make based on your tutor’s advice.)
Finally, briefly indicate 1) whether you have used a writing tutor previously and 2) whether and how you would do so again.
Your reflection should be at least 150 words in total.
Save your reflection in Microsoft Word. Then, on this assignment page, submit your written reflection AND the confirmation of your visit you collected.
(Don’t forget to revise your final draft incorporating the writing tutor feedback you received for submission at the end of Module 5! However, your revised draft is not due yet.)
