Small Business Challenges

Unexpected events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, can offer businesses an opportunity to evaluate their design and processes.

You will interview a local small business owner, manager, or employee to learn how they have adjusted to sustainability challenges across the triple bottom line. You will submit the results from your interview in a 3-page essay that includes a word cloud.

Step 1
By now, you have scheduled someone who owns or works for a local small business to participate in an interview. Follow up with a reminder and ask permission to audio record the interview for analysis purposes (you will not submit the audio recording).

Step 2
Develop 10 open-ended interview questions addressing sustainability challenges affecting small businesses. Consider the module readings as you develop your questions.

Step 3
Conduct the interview, recording it if permission was granted. Take notes to help with analysis.

Follow up with a note of thanks for the person’s time and expertise.

Step 4
Transcribe the interview recording to create interview data. Then, analyze the interview data to find connections across the triple-bottom-line framework.

Step 5
Create a word cloud from the transcribed interview data using any free online word cloud generator.

Step 6
Write a 5-page essay summarizing the interview, addressing how the interview data fits across the triple bottom line, and including the word cloud created from transcribed interview data.
