What is your role/purpose in this particular IEP meeting?
Role: Middle School special education inclusion teacher
Scenario: Mary is a student in your school district who is diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called GNA01 Neurodevelopmental Disorder. Mary currently thrives, socially and academically, in her co-taught 8th grade classrooms. Mary’s intellectual ability is in the average range. Mary is working on oral communication and communication systems with the speech therapist. Mary can currently make oral utterances and speak some simple words. She uses a communication device for most of her communication. Mary is currently on medication to control her seizures and can walk for short distances with a walker but also uses a wheelchair for longer distances or when she is tired. Her poor muscle tone (hypotonia) makes fine motor tasks and some gross motor tasks difficult, so she works with both a physical therapist and an occupational therapist. She also attends an adapted PE class for gym.
The middle school is holding her 8th grade annual IEP review before she transitions to high school. The people invited to the meeting include:
