Progressive Assignment Description 2024 Progressive Assignment Purpose: Learners will engage in a three-part, progressive assignment, with the intention of building capacity to engage in health promotion activities. These assignments are intended to encourage learners to reflect on a relevant health need or issue within their practice (e.g., community or region), critique the health need or issue, design a health promotion program plan with the aim of empowering community members to experience a better quality of life related to the health need or issue, and mobilize or translate key knowledge to relevant stakeholders. Assignment 1: Identifying an Issue and Implications For Assignment 1, learners will select and reflect on a relevant health need or issue within their practice (e.g., community or region); which encompasses: 1) describing a health need or issue, 2) exploring the implications of the health need or issue on the health of a population, 3) developing a summary and critique of the current evidence on ways to address the health need or issue, and 4) connecting the relevance of the health need or issue and its implication to advanced nursing practice. Overall, the assignment content should be written to convince stakeholders of the need to act on the identified issue in their community. In this assignment, learners will build an evidence base to support their health promotion program plan (see Assignment 2 guidelines). Related Course Outcomes • Incorporate theories, epidemiological, social, and environmental data to draw inferences regarding the health status of populations. • Evaluate systematic approaches to quality improvement in the health care system. • Investigate interprofessional approaches to garner multifaceted resources that empower populations to attain and preserve healthy communities. • Examine the role of the advanced practice nurse (APN) in providing leadership in the community related to health promotion, reduction of risk of complications, illness, and injury for populations. Guidelines Preparation Stage Learners can begin by reflecting on the concept of health and health determinants to help them think broadly about a possible health need or issue to ultimately build a health promotion program proposal around (see Assignment 2 guidelines). You have a lot of freedom in the health need or issue that you choose (e.g., smoking, obesity, nutrition, inactivity), however, you may want to consult with stakeholders in the community or your area of practice to discover relevant issues. Key Assignment Inclusions • Begin with a brief introduction outlining the contents and purpose of the assignment • Identify a health need or issue that you have experienced (or have learned about in your preparation consultation) in your community or practice area • Clearly describe the health need or issue and support with data (e.g., recent statistics within the past 5-10 years is preferable) from local, regional, national, and global sources); be sure to establish the relevance of the topic by including a description of the prevalence, the population affected and the geographic location. • Describe the implications of the health need or issue on the health of the population and greater society (e.g., learners may consider describing the economic burden of the issue or other implications of not intervening from a local, national, or greater societal perspective). • Provide a summary and critique* (i.e., strengths and limitations) of the current evidence on the issue, which may include: o Current practices and/or guidelines related to the health need or issue o Interventions and/or programs intended to address the health need or issue ▪ Consider interprofessional and/or intersectoral approaches o Strategies to engage community members and other stakeholders in the health need or issue • Based on the critique, identify where gaps exist and provide suggestions for future directions of health promotion practice (this inclusion will help provide context for Assignment 2) • Reflect on and provide rationale for how the advanced practice nurse is well positioned to support health promotion efforts related to the health need or issue. • Conclude with a summary of the content of the assignment, ultimately communicating the pressing need for action on the topic. *Please note that this assignment should focus on the analysis of the health need or issue and not just summaries of references read about the topic. Essential Requirements: • The assignment should not exceed 7-8 pages in length (excluding the title page, references, and appendices). • The assignment should include a minimum of 10 current scholarly sources (e.g., journal articles). Please strive to use Canadian sources, within the last 5-10 years unless using a classic work. Other sources such as scholarly websites, government documents/reports may also be used over and above the required scholarly sources to supplement your work. • The assignment should be written in a well-organized, clear, and logical fashion demonstrating critical self-reflection, detailed analysis, and original thought with correct APA formatting (APA 7th edition required) o Note that the American Psychological Association provides excellent assistance in interpreting APA style.
