GEOG-2408-770 | Environmental Perception and Communication PhotoVoice Assignment Instructions and Grading Rubric PhotoVoice Assignment #1 due Thursday, May 23 by 11:59 p.m. (upload to Nexus) 35% of final grade PhotoVoice Assignment #2 due Thursday, June 6 by 11:59 p.m. (upload to Nexus) 35% of final grade PhotoVoice is a research method that combines a photo and a written reflection to explain a situation, a space, a feeling, or an observation on a specific theme. For each of these assignments, you will produce a PhotoVoice inspired by a theme related to environmental perception, communication, and/or behaviour that we have studied in this course. The purpose is to relate your PhotoVoice to the course material that inspired it and reflect your understanding of the theme. Please choose a different course theme for each assignment. Each PhotoVoice assignment will feature a photo and a reflection paper of 400-500 words. The first element of each assignment is an original photo that you will take. The photo must demonstrate something that is self-explanatory, e.g., a lawn with a sign warning people not to walk on the grass because it has been sprayed with pesticide. It must also be something you can reflect on in the second part of the assignment. Please do not use this example for your assignment. The second element is a reflection paper of 400-500 words that you will write. The photo will serve as an entry point to an exploration of a course theme, and your reflections about how they are related. In the above example, your reflection could be on the course theme about the health impacts of toxic chemicals in the environment. You could discuss the tension between the commonly-held perception that green, weed-free grass is beautiful and natural, and the issues we have read about and discussed in class regarding the risks of pesticide exposure for humans and other animals. Note: Do not take photos that include people unless they are over 18 years of age and you have their consent to take and share their images for this assignment. Make sure they understand and agree that the instructor and your classmates will see the photos. Do not take photos of children under any circumstances, even if they ae related to you. Do not take photos of strangers. Please discuss your PhotoVoice ideas with the instructor far ahead of the deadline if you are unsure about how to do these assignments and/or want to make sure your ideas are appropriate for the assignments. Additional notes • All written assignments must be submitted via Nexus. Please do not email your assignment. Graded assignments will also be posted on Nexus. • Please use a 12-pt. font and double space your reflection. • Submit your reflection as a Word document . • Submit the photo you take as a .jpeg, or other format that can be opened on any computer. 1 • • • • You do not have to include outside sources, but if you refer to anything in the course’s readings or videos, or any other source (direct quote or paraphrasing), you must use proper APA or MLA citation and include a Bibliography or Works Cited. Include a word count (excluding Works Cited). The use of Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT, etc.) to produce any part of this assignment is prohibited and will result in a failing grade. There will be a deduction of 10% per day on late assignments. Assignments will not be accepted more than 7 days after they are due.
