For this discussion board, watch the film linked below. The, use the film, your textbook, and the documents posted below to write a Primary Post for the discussion board that addresses all of the prompts below. Your Primary Post must address all of the prompts in one single post. After you have submitted your Primary Post, you will be able to see other students’ posts. The last part of this assignment will be to reply to at least one other student’s Primary Post. For specific guidelines for your posts see the General Guidelines for Discussion Board Posts listed below the prompts.

The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara (2003): Robert McNamara was a World War II veteran, an executive for Ford Motor Company, and the Secretary of Defense for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. This documentary follows his life and focuses on life lessons he learned throughout his career during a very complicated and dramatic time in the history of the United States.

What surprised you most about McNamara’s experiences?

Which part of the film do you find the most interesting?

Choose at least two of McNamara’s “life lessons” and describe what historical evidence he uses to justify each lesson.

Choose at least two significant historical events from 1945-1975 and explain how McNamara’s lessons might have shaped or avoided the role of the US in those events.

Which of the ideas/lessons presented by McNamara do you think are most relevant to American foreign policy in the twenty-first century (2001 to today)?

General Guidelines for Posts

After following the instructions above use the guidelines below to prepare your posts. Remember, this is a two-part activity (Primary Posts and Replies) with specific points for each part.

Part 1 – Primary Post Guidelines (45 points):

The Primary Post must address all of the Discussion Board Prompts listed above and should be written as an essay. This assignment does not require any outside sources. The Primary Post can be completed using only the film and the textbook. If you choose to use outside sources, make sure to cite them, both in the text of your post and in a Works Cited at the end. Grades for the Primary Post will be based on the content of the answer and must be more than 300 words in length. Direct quotes do not count toward the required word count.

To make your Primary Post, click on the Discussion Board 2 link located below these guidelines. Then, select Create Thread. In the subject line, write your name and your favorite snack food. Next, type or copy your answer into the large text box below. Finally, click submit.

Part 2 – Reply Posting Guidelines (10 points):

Once you make a Primary Post, you will be able to view other students’ posts and comment on them. Read through a few different Primary Posts. I do not expect you to read all of them. Then, choose at least one on which to post a reply. It does not need the same amount of information as the Primary Post but must contribute to the discussion and provide some academic value. Reply posts should offer new ideas, different examples, or even contrary opinions to the original post. Phrases like “great post” or “I agree” will not be enough to earn credit for the reply part of this assignment. Reply posts should also be respectful and kind.

1. Note: Any inappropriate language, personal attacks, or hate speech will lead to a 0 for this assignment and possibly an F for the course. I have never had an instance of this in my classes, so please do not be the first.
2. There is no minimum writing requirement for Reply posts, but you must post at least one reply to earn credit for Part 2 of the Discussion Board assignment. While you are only required to post one reply, you are welcome to post more. Grades for this part will be based on the overall content and quality of your replies, not the number.
