Case I Nuby- Resistance
Noreidis “Nuby” is an 18-year-old woman who has recently faced work and university life. Nuby just graduated from High School this past May 2023 and entered the Community College in her town. She is studying Marketing and Social Networks. Recently, Nuby was referred to the “Learn to Manage Your Life” Agency by her teacher; She noticed that Nuby’s interest in her classes had waned and her academic performance was suffering. Nuby says that in addition to college she also works part-time at Urban Outfitters, a youth clothing and accessories store. She says that she does not like to work or study and that to be an “influencer” she does not need more than Instagram and a relaxed life. Nuby complains and says that no one told her that she would have to work or study to earn money and that her parents should support her with money to be able to achieve her goals. Instead, she forced her to study and work.
During the intake call, Nuby allowed her to talk to her parents. Her parents, Leo and Cairo, are Latino immigrants from Salvador and owners of a pupusa and fruit juice food truck. They report that from around the age of 15 or 16 they noticed their daughter’s interest in social networks and her interest in the number of “likes and/or followers” she obtained. At the same time, they say that they began to notice her lack of interest and a certain anger at having to help them by working in the family business. Nuby’s parents commented that she told them “I don’t have to work, I am her responsibility, and I wasn’t born to work.” Her parents admit to requiring an education of some kind before allowing her to focus on her career as an “influencer.” They comment that being a Hispanic immigrant demands a lot from you, which is why you need to work hard and prepare to have a quality future. Additionally, they described how they sacrificed for years to give her a better life and opportunities. In the interview with Nuby, this case manager, he notes an immense resistance to change and to participating in the agency process.
Case II – Radames – Cooperator/Willing
Radames is a 34-year-old Italian man who four months ago welcomed his third child and his first girl. At the same time, he just received more responsibilities at work. Radames calls the agency because he reports not knowing who or where to turn. At the same time, he states that he also does not know what steps he needs to follow and that he feels that he needs to relearn how to manage his life. Radames describes feeling stressed and having lost interest in the things he usually liked to do. He comments that his hobbies included playing video games, going to target shooting ranges, and watching his Lego series. Radames reports that he does not feel motivated to do his hobbies and feels tired most of the time. He comments that he feels frustrated at work because he is too tired to concentrate and he feels frustrated at home because he doesn’t have time to rest. Radames admits that his wife is loving and provides time for his rest and hobbies. However, he is the one who fails to develop balance.
During the intake call, Radames was willing to comply with the process and sent all the requested information on time. At the same time, he allowed his wife to also participate in the admission process. Among the most outstanding information that his wife provides is that she has noticed a change in her husband’s mood and attitudes for about two months. She comments: “He has always been a passive and loving man but lately his frustration is coming out of his pores, I mean, he has become very responsive when I ask him for help with the children. He constantly complains about caring tasks for him which honestly makes me angry. He makes me angry because I am with the three of them all day and I don’t have the “break of going to work and coming back.” Despite this, Radames’ wife admits that she logically recognizes that work is a responsibility and not a “break.” During the interview with his case manager, Radames was cooperative with the process and the suggestions made.
