Interests Assignment
Introduction
In this assignment you will take a brief career assessment that will provide a starting place to reflect on your interests. It is based on career development theory, Holland Code. The summary of this theory is that there are six basic types of work environments and individuals are happiest when they are matched in the work environment that captures their attention, skills, and personality best. Advocates for this theory believe it helps individuals consider their work environment early in the career development process and show that majority of work environments can be categorized into these six major themes. Critics believe this oversimplifies the career development process and may be less applicable in the future world of work. Consider these perspectives as you receive the results of your assessment. For additional information on Holland Code before getting started watch this video as well.
Assignment
For this assignment we will use Holland Code as a starting place. You will complete the provided assessment and start the process of thinking about the environment(s) you want to consider. Are there industries you are gravitated towards? Have you already thought about careers within those environments? Do these align with your Holland Code results?
Complete the 60 question career assessment. For this assignment focus on your RIASEC Code results (Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, or Conventional) and not necessarily the industries it has matched you with, although feel free to explore those too. Reflect on the results. Do you relate to the themes provided? Which key words from the values, interests, and descriptors provided within those themes do you relate to? Are there any you feel do not accurately describe you?

In about 5-8 sentences summarize your debrief based on some of the facilitating questions I provided above.

Connect with someone who shares two of the top RIASEC codes. You can give the assessment to a friend or I can assist with pairing you with a classmate. Have a 15 minute conversation around some of your likes and dislikes. Consider the following:
1. What’s your dream car/ vehicle?
2. Dream Vacation?
3. What’s your favorite thing to do if you have a day free of any obligations
Repeat and have a 15 minute conversation with someone with at least two differences in their top three RIASEC codes. What did you notice about the conversation with the individual with similar codes? What was different when you chatted with someone with different codes?
