In addition, this assessment is aimed at considering how you will continue to develop your competencies beyond this subject. Melbourne Business School Department of Management & Marketing MGMT90140 Management Competencies Key learning outcomes of the task are: Practicing self-reflection and analytical thinking Identifying development activities based on theoretical insight Building communication skills Assessment Task You will need to reflect on the following aspects: What have you done concretely to self-improve, what insights have you gained, what have you learned about yourself (in relation to the chosen competence areas) and what progress have you made throughout the semester for the two management competence areas that you selected in assignment #1 (or alternatively the two competence areas you have actively worked on to improve this semester)? What suitable, concrete next steps can you take to further cultivate these two competences? Critically evaluate these steps. As you reflect, you are expected to keep in mind your professional purpose (from mini-exercise #A; or a revised version of it in light of new insights you may have gained throughout the semester regarding your career aspirations). You will need to consider the following aspects: How well equipped do you feel to pursue your professional purpose? Is there further development in the two competency domains you actively worked on this semester and/or development in other related competency domains that would be critical to your pursuit? To support your reflection and brainstorming of next steps, you are expected, just as with Assignment 1, to contact your learning buddy and talk with them about your competence development journey and professional aspirations. You may help each other identify personally relevant next steps for your further competence development efforts in support of the pursuit of your professional purpose. You will need to describe some insights gained from your conversation with your learning buddy. Based on your reflection and conversation with your learning buddy, write an essay (2000 words, +/- 10%, reference list excluded). In this essay you will address the following issues: Critical Reflection: discuss key competence development activities undertaken throughout the semester towards developing the two management competencies you chose to focus on and reflect on learning and insights gained throughout your competence development journey and how they matter for the pursuit of your professional purpose. Critically evaluate and analyse your own progress on the development of your two chosen competencies, including assessing the extent to which you met your self-improvement goals and explaining why/why not, and identifying specific competency sub-aspects for further self-improvement and explaining why they may be particularly valuable to the pursuit of your professional purpose. Make sure to include concrete examples/evidence to support your critical reflection and analysis of learning and progress. Melbourne Business School Department of Management & Marketing MGMT90140 Management Competencies Insights from conversation with learning buddy: describe some key insights gained from your conversation with your learning buddy about your competence development journey and plans for further competence development. Development steps: for each of your two chosen competences describe two concrete future competence development activities that can help you develop these competencies further over the next semester. Critically evaluate your plans for further competence development, i.e. identify advantages and disadvantages, risks/limitations of the developmental activities you want to implement next semester and potential mitigation strategies to ensure robust and effective further competence development. In the essay, make use of the concepts and theories from the seminar sessions and the assigned materials, to support your critical reflection and analysis of your self-improvement journey this semester and the conception and evaluation of your plan for further development. In addition, you need to consider the layout and presentation of the report to ensure that it is of a professional standard. This includes (but is not limited to) aspects such as spelling and grammar checking, formatting, conforming to the word count limit, references, citations and the use of supporting graphics. Make sure to carefully read the Assignment 3 FAQs available at the end of this document for further guidance. Melbourne Business School Department of Management & Marketing MGMT90140 Management Competencies Assignment #3 FAQs Do we have to stick to the two competency areas identified as priorities in Assignment 1? The objective of assignment 1 was to help you set personal objectives. We understand you may have decided to focus on other areas as we introduced more fully each of the competency areas. We want you to reflect on areas you have actively worked to improve this semester and identify next steps that are most relevant to you in your selfimprovement journey. If they are not the ones identified in assignment 1, it is fine. It is all about you critically reflecting on what you have done this semester, the insights you have gained, the progress you have made and you identifying suitable next steps for further development. Ultimately, we are testing your knowledge of class material (theory integration counts towards 25% of your mark in this assignment) but we want this reflective essay to be helpful to you. In terms of integration of class material, should I focus on the seminar contents and assigned readings for the two chosen competencies or should I cover materials pertaining to other competency domains as much as possible? It is indeed important in this assignment to demonstrate effective engagement with class materials (25%). We expect you to make use of the concepts and theories from the seminar sessions and the assigned readings, to support both your analysis of your selfimprovement journey this semester AND the conception and evaluation of your plan for further development. The choice of which concepts and theories from class to use is yours to make. Students often choose to leverage and demonstrate a strong grasp of some key concepts and theories from the weeks that pertain to the competencies they invested in further developing throughout the semester (often because that was a basis for some of the practical experiments they conducted etc), while potentially bringing a few elements from other weeks (including the week on self-improvement) to support their reflective work or the design and critical evaluation of next steps for further competence development. Again the choice is yours to make. Beware of concept dropping. When leveraging a concept or a framework, it is important to articulate clearly its relevance to the point you are trying to make, i.e. to demonstrate your understanding of the concept/framework in how you apply it to your analysis or the design and evaluation of your plans for further development. Regarding ‘Integration of theory/content from class seminars and assigned materials 25%’, does that mean only effective use of concepts and theories from the course construct the grade, and independent research is optional? Under the ‘integration of class materials’ criterion, we do indeed pay attention to your efforts to integrate concepts and theories from class (this includes seminar content and required readings) in your assignment, in particular the quality/effectiveness of those efforts. However, you may have engaged in independent research this semester as you realised the importance of learning/increasing your knowledge base for effective competence development in your two chosen competency domains. If you have done so, you may want to discuss those efforts and the insights gained as part of your discussion and reflection on your own learning/self-improvement journey. Melbourne Business School Department of Management & Marketing MGMT90140 Management Competencies Also, if done well, integration of some independently sourced materials can translate into better critical reflection and more solid/well-informed next steps (and evaluation of next steps). You may want to think about how some additional research might support the quality of your reflection and next steps and thus may improve your marks on those criteria. The key is how effectively you use those resources to support your reflection on your learning/self-improvement journey and your future development planning, not the number of resources used. The same holds for concepts and theories from class materials. I maintained a written journal of practical experiments and small steps of success toward my competency development goals, can I include screenshots of that journal? I would like to upload them as appendices as they proved to be very useful in my rediscovering myself and my specific competency challenges. It is great that you kept a self-improvement diary. As we mentioned earlier in the semester, keeping a journal to document your efforts, practical experiments, learnings, reflections etc in relation to the competencies you target for self-improvement is really helpful in supporting a self-improvement project effectively. You are very welcome to attach excerpts of your journal as an appendix or as part of your reflection, remembering that any visuals or appendixes add value only if discussed. Keep the reader in mind as you decide where to place the excerpts. Do we need an introduction and conclusion for the assessment? The critical reflection report would benefit from a short introduction and conclusion. Can we use tables in support of our reflection and discussion of next steps? Will they count towards the word count? You can use tables. They will not be included in the word count. However, you need to make sure that you are not overusing them – be judicious as to which ones to include and use them as a support not as a substitute. Using one to provide concrete illustrations of steps/strategies you have introduced/discussed in the core of your text would be fine for example. How should we cite class material? You don’t have to cite the slides from class. You simply need to explicitly name the frameworks, theories and ideas from class you’re using (e.g. drawing on the 4D communication framework, I realised I have a tendency to neglect relational statements and thus worked to….In particular, etc). We need you to use in-text citations, e.g. (Hackman, 2009), if you drew a particular insight from one of the required readings or any additional readings you may have done as part of your self-improvement journey. You also need to reference these at the end of your essay, following APA guidelines for referencing. The list of reference is excluded from the word count. Are headings and in-text citations included in the word count? Both headings and in-text citations (e.g. (Pfeffer, 2010)) are included in the word count.
