Communication Studies 343, Spring 2024: Exam Two Exam #2 involves writing three short informal, conversational, personal, specific, self-identifying discussions to help you consolidate your own personal “Key Takeaways” from our course. Though these personal discussions should be informal and conversational, they need to be expressed in clear, generally correct writing and be more than just rough drafts. Writing that is confusing, difficult to follow, or filled with errors will lose points, as will writing that is too impersonal, general, formulaic, sounds like Chat GPT, or only ‘regurgitates’ information. Each of your discussions must include/apply specific terms/concepts from the text/slides into your own personal, conversational response to a prompt below. This means you must write your discussion in your own informal words from your own real unique perspective, and it must contain enough specific details from your own experience this semester that it could not have been expressed by someone else, so DO NOT use secondary sources, Chat GPT, etc. Be sure to read the instructions above and each prompt carefully. Each discussion should be approximately 1/3 single-spaced typed page, and thus your whole exam should be approximately 1 single-spaced typed page. E-mail me your whole exam in one document, preferably a Word file, either directly [email protected] or through Canvas, whichever you prefer, by Monday, May 13. Write your discussions in response to the three prompts below, and again, your informal discussions must contain details, examples, and insights that are personal, unique, self-identifying, and specific to you and your project group. – Prompt #1: For your first discussion, choose either A or B (not both): A) “You cannot not communicate” means even when you’re not talking, you’re sending messages to others through your nonverbal messages. Using concepts in Ch. 6 about Nonverbal Communication in Groups, identify and describe both specific nonverbal behaviors you’ve typically used in groups AND some of the specific nonverbal behaviors you observed in your project group this semester. Discuss how those behaviors have contributed to your own and others’ individual effectiveness as group members. Also discuss the effect some of these nonverbal behaviors had on your group’s overall effectiveness this semester. Be specific about behaviors that contributed to your group’s interdependence and collaboration, as well as those that detracted from your group’s communication and cohesion. B) What constitutes effective Listening in Groups, and why is it so important to group success? Integrating concepts in Ch. 7 (such as Forms of Non-Listening, Poor Listening Habits, Listening Preferences, Types of Listening, etc.), describe your own personal listening practices in groups, including a few of your own listening strengths and growth areas. In addition, describe some of the specific listening behaviors you observed members of your project group this semester engaging in, and discuss the impact of those listening behaviors on your group’s overall communication and collaboration. Be specific about the listening practices you observed that enhanced your group’s collaboration and cohesion, as well as those that hindered your group’s communication. Prompt #2: What are a few Key Takeaways about effective Group Dynamics and Team Communication that you’ve learned through experiencing the interactions and behaviors of each member of your project group? Be specific and relate your observations to course concepts as you describe your own unique perceptions of the specific interactions and contributions of each individual member of your group, by name, including yourself. Keep in mind what you write is confidential and that, of course, I understand it reflects your own unique perspective. Aim to identify and discuss specific behaviors of each member that both contributed positively and may have posed challenges to the effective functioning of your group. For each group member, include your response to the following question: Would you want to work with this person again in future on a collaborative team effort involving accountability for results? Why or why not? Considering together the various behaviors and contributions of each member of your group this semester, what are the main “Takeaways” about Group Dynamics and Team Communication that you can carry forward and apply to your own future team experiences? Prompt #3: What are a few Key Takeaways about Group Dynamics and Team Communication that you have learned from your team’s research into the specific group you studied for your course project? Be specific and relate your observations to course concepts as you identify and discuss a few main “Takeaways” that you personally have gained from your group’s study of the specific team/group that your group researched this semester. Include “takeaways” resulting from the collaborative research of your whole group, not just the specific piece of the research you focused on. Discuss specific ways that your “Takeaways” can help you better understand and participate in groups/team in your own future experiences and career.
