As a religious Orthodox Jew, my value system includes a strong emphasis on connection, community, family, and the Jewish definition of morality. As a counselor, I can and will use these values that I grew up with to create a supportive and holistic space for my clients. In providing substance use disorder counseling, it would be essential to integrate these values into the therapeutic approach. As well, I am passionate about being culturally aware and sensitive because I have had many experiences where I am misunderstood due to my background.
One challenge may be bridging the cultural gap and understanding the unique perspectives, values, and practices of clients whose backgrounds differ from your own. However, as I said, I am passionate and up for this challenge. It is crucial to approach each client with humility, recognizing and respecting their circumstances, especially when they differ from my own religious and cultural context. Developing cultural competence and a willingness to learn about diverse belief systems is essential in providing inclusive substance use disorder counseling. In addiction counseling, it is necessary to understand why a client behaves the way they do, think the way they do, etc., and this begins with understanding the roots of who they are. I don’t think there’s any one specific culture that I’d find especially difficult to understand, as I’d explore any culture that is foreign to me.
The criminal justice system is increasingly recognizing the role it can play in treating individuals with substance use disorders. Take drug courts, for example. They are focused on steering people away from traditional incarceration and into treatment programs. It’s a shift that acknowledges the importance of understanding the root causes, like substance abuse, as a more effective strategy for harm reduction. When it comes to private for-profit correctional systems, it becomes more complicated. There’s a whole debate on how effective these systems are in treating substance use disorder offenders. The concern is that the profit motive might clash with the goal of genuine rehabilitation. As social workers, we know it’s not just about making money, it’s about ensuring the well-being and successful recovery of individuals; however, this goal can sometimes be forgotten by larger institutions. Therefore, transparency and accountability are crucial.
Conley’s research describes both successes and challenges in the Nexus program. As said in the research paper, “The likelihood of any single participant completing the Nexus program varies by specific participant characteristics (Conley & Lake, 2017).” This defines the conflict of having a large program; we lose sight of the individual, holistic approach to treatment. Every participant has infinite complexities that make up who they are and therefore it is difficult to define the success of these programs. The study talks about how important it is to keep collecting data even after clients finish the program. It emphasizes the complexities of the clients, explaining the need to keep learning about them from the people who work with them every day. However, ultimately, the program undoubtedly makes more of an impact than incarceration; it turns ‘offenders’ into upstanding citizens.
