Within the realm of research and the development of evidence-based practice, it’s crucial to consider results as well as the significance of how the results can be applied. When results within the research are considered to be significant, it means that these results are reliable and were deemed to not be due to randomness or chance. Similarly, it supports the finding that a relationship exists between the variables of the research. As for clinical significance, these are findings that are seen to ‘improve medical care resulting in the improvement of an individual’s physical function, his/her mental status, and ability to engage in social life’ (Sharma, 2021). Overall, these findings can improve nursing practice as well as patient outcomes and quality of life. Within my project on medical device-related pressure injury prevention in ICU patients, clinical significance can contribute to such prevention through clinically significant findings. Clinically significant findings ‘integrate the best scientific evidence, clinician expertise and opinion, and patient perspectives in making decisions about patient care’ (Carpenter, et al., 2021). These approaches and findings contribute to the development of evidence-based practice. Equally important, these findings not only can be utilized in current nursing practices but can help support future research projects that advance the future of patient care and health outcomes.
