One Cause of American Violence by Gerry Means vocabulary words—inception: beginning inundated: overwhelm, flood takes place malignant: destructive, evil mayhem: chaos America provides many blessings for its citizens. This country’s inhabitants enjoy freedoms and opportunities that make them the envy of many in most parts of the globe. Those freedoms, along with an almost unequaled degree of material wealth, make the United States what some term “the greatest country in the world.” But along with the blessings resides a curse, one that has afflicted the nation since its inception. That curse is random violence, and, like the blessings of freedom and prosperity, its effects have become more prominent in recent years. One of the main reasons for this increased prominence is the prevalence, glorification, and casual nature of violence as it is portrayed in the popular media. In films, television shows, comic books, and music produced for young people, the use of violence is portrayed as an acceptable way to resolve conflict, correct perceived injustice, and express anger. Youngsters who grow up in stable households or who are taught effectively that violence is not an acceptable option may find themselves resorting to more appropriate ways to resolve problems. But those from less fortunate circumstances who find themselves inundated with tens of thousands of violent images, many of which are extremely graphic, frequently succumb to the malignant instincts born of repeated exposure to those images. Generally speaking, the younger a person is, the more easily influenced he or she is. Not only is the popular culture of young people saturated with violence, but violence is frequently presented in the form of acts by “heroic” characters such as those portrayed by Arnold 6|Page Schwartzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. In their films, these actors are usually seen killing people by the dozens while pursuing some “noble” aim, with many of their victims dying in horrific ways. Young people, usually males, flock to such films, and some people say that they do so to see their heroes act out aggressive instincts that are deemed socially unacceptable. The vicarious thrill that so many enjoy while watching a “Terminator,” a “Rambo,” or a “Dirty Harry” mash, crash, and smash through his enemies must be considered as one of the reasons why violence, like sex, sells— especially among young males. There are many who say that violence as it is portrayed in the entertainment media has nothing to do with the recent upsurge in societal mayhem. They argue that most young people who watch violent television shows or who play ultra-violent video games such as the immensely popular “Grand Theft Auto” go on to lead lives that are violence-free. They also state that any attempt to curb the increase of numbingly violent scenes that youngsters are usually fed as entertainment is the first step on the road to censorship. The second idea may have merit, but the inescapable fact remains that a child or a young adult who is witness to a constant stream of glorified, glamorized violence—which often takes place with no negative consequences—is more likely to respond violently in situations of interpersonal conflict than is a child who has been free of such imagery. Young people in the twenty-first century are more violent than those of any preceding generation, just as images in the popular media are more violent than they have ever been. Films, television, “gangsta” rap lyrics, etc. are not the only factors that have contributed to what has happened in recent years. But any comprehensive analysis that seeks to find the causes of increased violence among young people in the United States must include prominently the proliferation of violent imagery that threatens to dominate popular culture. The curse of violence may be as American as apple pie, but this country’s inhabitants are threatened in a way that they have not been threatened before. I. Reading Comprehension 1.
