Discussion #6: Gender

After reading Kendall, chapters #11, you have learned sex is the biological determination of female and male. And, gender is the socially constructed differences between female and male associated with femininity and masculinity. The key difference between the 2 concepts is sex is biologically determined, while gender is socially constructed. Feminism is the belief that women and men ought to be treated equally and have equal rights. Sexism is the attitudes and behaviors that are used to justify the superior treatment of one sex, usually men, and the inferior treatment of the other sex, usually women.

In the United States today, do you think sexism is on the decline. Why or why not? Support your answer with information from chapter #11. Cite the information with the page number and textbook edition you are using, for example (pg.100, ed.10).

Discussion #7: Population and Environment

After reading Kendall, Chapter #19, you have read about population. A major impact of population is on the environment including climate change. One aspect of climate change is a carbon footprint. A definition for your carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide released into the air because of your use of transportation, electricity, food, clothing, and other goods and services. The website Cool California, which you have just explored, allows you to calculate your carbon footprint. Go to https://coolcalifornia.arb.ca.gov/, click on blue box which says Household, and click on Carbon Calculator to calculate your personal (or your family’s) carbon footprint.

After you have calculated your personal (or your family’s) carbon footprint state the boldface number at the top of the screen which is your carbon footprint (Household tons CO2eq/year). Then click on the Take Action icon and list 3 of the options (use the exact same words as in the list) which would reduce your carbon footprint. Support your answer with information from chapter #14.
