Last week, I spent much needed solo time in nature. During this time, I became deeply aware of the wind…nature’s breath…of its connectivity to everything…of its ability to weave an individual thread to each of us, all of which compose a larger intricate web – yes, we are all connected by nature’s breath. And her breath can shift things, ever so gently and of course, not so gently. Nature’s breath carries all that we exhale, individually and as a collective…she carries the beauty and the disease…which touches the collective and all of nature. A deep reminder that we are all connected. Harmony and balance…mass imprisonment…the impact of an individual on the collective…the collective’s impact on an individual…artifacts of the collective, such as environmental policy…compassion, humanness, kindness…stress, depression, PTSD, importance of awareness and/or consciousness, disconnection from each other…feminine and masculine energies…disembodiment from nature. Yes, this is a class on criminal justice and crime policy. Feel into your graduation day…the day you become a college graduate. Visualize it…what are your emotions…your feelings? And on this day, you find yourself among the other students waiting to walk across the stage…many years of formal education culminating with those steps. While you wait, you begin talking about various experiences at IUP, classes you have taken, friends, etc, and you bring up this class… How do you explain this class…this connection between the individual and the collective? The importance of tribes, of individual energy? How do you explain this concept of balance and harmony in criminal justice policy through your lenses, based on this class? What is your role, as a college graduate to bring harmony and balance to yourself and to the collective? And yes, how do you envision manifesting that role as you begin to seek solutions for our deep injuries to the collective? And yes, your breath, what you exhale finds its way into the collective and that which you inhale, comes from the collective… As you ponder these questions, your role and responsibilities, I invite you to remember, to feel the beautiful mystery of being human, of being you on this wondrous planet of ours.
