Introduction to African American and Diaspora Studies Spring Semester 2024 Prof. Ronald Williams Final Exam Due in Class on Thursday, May 9, 2024 at 4PM LATE EXAMS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR ANY REASON For your final exam, please write an analytical review of the film, Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North by Katrina Browne. Your assignment is to construct an essay that includes a clearly written introduction, supporting narrative, and conclusion. In composing your paper, you should be sure to include both summary and interpretation/analysis. As you summarize, you should discuss the main features of the film including its argument, organization, key facts, events, and ideas. Keep in mind that the summary is an opportunity to demonstrate clearly that you watched the film. The analytical part of your essay is of equal (and in some ways greater) importance. This is your opportunity to demonstrate that you have thought critically about the film. As you prepare to write, you may want to consider the following: What are the strengths and weaknesses of the film? How well does the author support her argument? What is at stake with this argument/with this film? What is your assessment of the analytical quality? Is it stronger in some places than in others? What is the film’s main argument? What type of evidence does she use to support the claims that she makes? What does the film add to our understanding about the subject matter of our course? What other films, texts, or topics should the film be in conversation with? Do you recommend the film? If so, to whom do you recommend it and why? In your analysis, please feel free to address other issues that you feel are worthy of discussion. Your essay must be typewritten in Times New Roman, 12-point font, and total 5 double-spaced pages with one-inch margins. You should also include a cover page that says your name and course information and a staple in the upper left corner. Remember to give your essay a title. Finally, your essay should conform to the format guidelines from the Chicago Manual of Style. THANKS FOR A GREAT SEMESTER!
