STUDENT OBJECTIVES:
1. Develop basic skill in using selected electronic indices and databases of professional literature.
2. Develop an awareness of the numerous social, political, and economic forces currently affecting nursing and health care.
3. Apply the standards of the American Psychological Association (APA) Manual for writing a scholarly paper (3-page minimum to 5-page maximum).
4. Demonstrate the ability to express in writing a concise summary of personal thoughts and an analysis of article selected.
5. Develop skill in oral discussion with classmates.
DIRECTIONS:
1. Select an article from a professional journal that discusses an issue currently affecting nursing and health care. Be careful to select a full article and not a research study. Use this checklist to help determine that you have an appropriate article and check with instructor if you have any doubt.
▪ the name(s) of the author(s) is present
▪ the article is written in language and terminology that you understand
▪ the article is a minimum of four pages
▪ the article’s theme is relevant to content in the Nur 215 course
▪ the article is published in a journal usually read by members of the profession and not the general public.
DO NOT select an article that has any of the following characteristics:
▪ Has sections with labels such as ‘methodology’, ‘findings.’ This probably a research study.
▪ Is a letter to the Editor, an editorial column, news brief, or personal opinion/story of a personal experience?
▪ Is more than five years old (written before January 2018)?
▪ Is published in a magazine that is available to the general public, such as TIME, Ebony, Good Housekeeping?
2. Summarize the article in three to four paragraphs. DO NOTexceed two pages for the summary. See Issues Paper Grading Rubric “Summary of article.”
3. Identify what you think is most important about the issue. Explain how this issue relates to content in NUR 215. Describe how this issue is affecting nursing and health care. See Issues Paper Grading Rubric “Analysis of issue in relation to course content and effect on nursing and health care.”
4. Do you think there is anything that you as an individual should/could do about the issue? Is there anything that our professional organization(s) should/could do? See Issues Paper Grading Rubric “Recommended action for professional organization(s).”
5. Describe how this article has influenced the way you think about nursing and health care. See Issues Paper Grading Rubric “Influence of article on personal perspective.”
6. Prepare a scholarly paper that addresses objectives 2, 3, and 4. Use the APA Manual for help with citations, paper formatting, language use, etc.
