Unit 3: Beginner’s Guide
In the third major assignment, you will provide an analysis of a discourse community you are a member of by writing a “beginner’s guide” for someone newly involved with the group. For example, perhaps you are a member of the Marching 110 or maybe you play intramural sports…if these are groups focused on a common goal and there is written communication among members of the group, chances are these are discourse communities. Or, you could focus on a discourse community you are a part of outside of school, for example a religious group, RPG group, or social media group. You could even focus on a discourse community you were part of in high school. As long as you have experience within the group, can analyze it in terms of Swales’s characteristics, and can provide insider/veteran information to a newbie, you will be able to complete this project. It should be a topic/group you find engaging and one you can say something about from personal experience.
Your guide will need to do these things:
Balance between writing for a general university audience and for someone newly involved in the group you are focusing on.
Break down the group as a discourse community by referring to Swales’ characteristics of DCs and interpreting how the group meets those characteristics. Show special attention to genre and written communication among the group.
Provide insider/veteran information regarding Swales’s characteristics and other things newbies will need to know to succeed in the DC.
Focus on a group you have first-hand experience within and draw on that experience for evidence related to the analysis.
Integrate 2-3 other sources in a thoughtful way that supports your beginner’s guide.
Your guide should be at least 1200-1500 words. (5-6 pages, double-spaced)
It should be formatted in MLA style. (You may use APA, if you prefer)
The final form of the guide is assumed to be an academic document (hence the MLA style requirement above). However, if you have a more authentic idea for the form (a web-text, ‘zine, multimodal composition, etc.), please feel free to ask for accommodations for the form requirements.
Any writing terms adjacent to “discourse community” (for which you are using Swales’s characteristics/definitions for), such as genre, should be defined. Avoid using dictionary definitions. Using definitions from Dirk or Meltzer or other readings is okay. Always use a personal perspective when covering such terms.
“A Beginner’s Guide to __________” is an acceptable title. However, personalizing it, for example “’Leroy Jenkins!!!!!’: A Beginner’s Guide to WoW Guilds,” is more engaging.
I am a member of a discourse community responsible for the welfare of young people. We generate income from members from the monthly contribution which is mandatory for every member. We use the resources we must help our members in time of difficulty like a loss of an immediate family, members, when a member. My role in this community is to make sure that all members are cared for and receive full benefit when the time arrives. We sometimes organise soccer games to raise more funds for our community. And so far, it has been good for us.
My other discourse community is my workplace where the aim and objectives are for the patient to be satisfied with the care, we delivered to them. Every staff member is working towards the same goal, and we work with a plan that benefits the patients and helps each other. My role at my job is to triage patients for the providers we have at the facility. We have a chronic care provider who deals with updating patients medical profile and renewed their medication, we have a doctor sick provider who deals with patient medical request for new treatment or an acute illness and we have a provider who work with patients who go out of the facility for appointments, this provider do all follow-up appointment to make sure that we did not miss anything from patient outside appointment. The aim is to make sure we take care of all our patients well.
Another discourse community that I belong is my college club which was formed to help its members get good grades in college. Senior members are tasked with ensuring they help junior members with their assignment by guiding them how to do it and helping with study strategies. We also do social functions like going out for dinners and helping each other. The goals were to make sure all our members graduate with good college degrees.
Use one of my discourse community above for the assignment, I need a draft and final copy. The draft can be 3-4 pages and the final copy as describe above.
