Your best friend who you grew up with asks to go to coffee. When you two sit down, he seems really upset and says he has a terrible secret he needs to get off his chest. He tells you that 14 years earlier, he killed a woman by accident. He was driving home late after visiting his ill parents; it was dark and raining. While on an overpass, he saw a woman running towards the car, waving her hands, looking for help. He went to pull over and started hydroplaning. He accidentally hit her, and she fell over the side to the street below. When it happened, he jumped out of the car and looked over the side only to see her body and a homeless person standing over it. Today the man is married and has two children. He has a good family, has a good life, and is a good citizen. The homeless person was accused of the crime but died before he could be tried and punished.
In preparation for the assignment, ask yourself the following questions: Do you believe the story as it is told? Do you think good can come of this man’s confession? How much pain would this cause his family? Does it matter that no one is at risk of being mistaken as the murderer? Would you now be an accessory since you know and did not turn him in?
