Linguistics Question
Assessment description
This assessment aims to improve further your critical thinking and ethical decision-making skills by examining real-life examples. It will develop your writing and communication skills as well as application of relevant theory, principles, codes and toolkit.
Select two pieces of journalism from a local, national, global media organisation (in English language) on the same topic of national or global significance for comparison (e.g the Israel-Gaza conflict, the war in Ukraine, climate summits, migration, protests, natural or manmade disaster or politics, domestic and sexual abuse, suicide, gender, ethnicity, race, sport, entertainment etc.). The articles need to be recent from 2023 or 2024 so check the dates of the articles carefully. You can choose 2 news article/reports, or broadcasts, magazine features, anything that fits a definition of journalism from two different traditional media organisations (e.g. BBC, Channel 4, Al Jazeera, The NYT, The Guardian, The Daily Mail, The People’s Daily, etc.) that raise one or more ethical problems/dilemmas that you are interested in. (This is an example of two articles from the coverage of the Hamas attack on Oct 7th, 2023 from The NYT and from The Guardian that raise some ethical dilemmas. WARNING:There is very graphic and potentially distressing content on sexual violence against women in both articles so you do not need to read the examples if don’t want to). Further examples will be discussed in seminars.
Identify the ethical issue(s)/dilemmas involved in the article. These could be subtle or more obvious. Be specific about the ethical challenge(s) and how the journalist/media approached the coverage or solution to the dilemma in the pieces. For example, if there was graphic content/description/detail and images/video, you can discuss if publishing these was justified and in the public interest or gratuitous. For example, if the journalist/s quoted anonymous sources, was that necessary/not necessary and why? For example, if some private details/sensitive information about an individual are disclosed/discussed, was it ethical to breach someone’s privacy? For example, if it’s a coverage of incident or human suffering, e.g. mass shooting (There was a recent mass shooting in the Czech Republic) or suicide, how did they handle the details/reporting of the case and/or interviews with victims or family members? For example, if the ethical issue concerns stereotyping, is that problematic and why? E.g. mentions of gender, ethnicity, race. These are just some examples to start you thinking. You will identify your own as you select the pieces for comparison.
Discuss potential ethical solutions to the problems/dilemmas you have identified and offer alternative solutions in relation to different theoretical philosophies, e.g utilitarian or ubuntu and cite media regulation and ethical code(s) that are relevant to the context of the case you have chosen. (e.g. if you choose an article from The Guardian or the BBC, which ethical code do they follow)
You do not need to compare the articles word for word or conduct discourse analysis. Remember, the focus of the essay is on the ethical problem(s)/dilemmas that you have identified and how the journalists have approached these, their solutions.
Once you have examined the issue(s) involved, you CAN present your own views and opinions and outline your own ethical solution/decision to the problem(s) you have discussed in your essay, incorporating the toolkits you have learned. In other words, what would you do and why if you had to write these?
Please make sure you include links to the two pieces you are discussing in the references list. We will read/check these.
