By: Amy Shortt The most impressive artwork was Pieta by Michelangelo because I saw it in person, and I could not forget the overwhelming tremor that came from within me. It was like someone threw cold water on me. I could not understand how Pieta could have such a powerful impact. It just happened in a few seconds. It is the most impressive artwork not only in this art class, but in all the artwork I have ever seen. It is different from seeing a small picture of it in a textbook. The actual Pieta is larger than life-size, and it was placed on a high pedestal. The audience had to look up at it as if worshiping it. Virgin Mary’s face contains numerous emotions, which can be interpreted differently by audiences with various nuances. The statue looked as though I was looking at a real scene. I particularly recall the detailed veins on Jesus’ right hand because it was close at eye level for me. The details appeared more realistic than those of actual humans. Michelangelo had the ability to infuse something divine into his artworks. By: maira oliva The artwork that I was drawn towards is “The Swing” by Jean-Honore Fragonard. The oil painting is very classical and also depicts romanticism. The painting depicts a woman on a swing who appears very flirtatious can be interpreted as conveying the message of potential joy and unhappiness. On one side you see the light reflecting on the man falling in the bushes as he sticks his hand out to touch the woman as she swings and kicks her shoe off. The angelic statue above him has its hand near his lips as he seems to be keeping a secret of their love affair. On the darker side of the image, we see her husband as he is pulling her towards him with two angel statues that hold on to each other and appear to be scared. This theme illustrates sensuality and the fear of losing someone. The pastel colors are what captivates my attention along with the naturalism of the outdoors. The brush strokes and detailing of the plants such as the leaves, branches and pastel flowers surrounding them are very beautiful. It reminds me of one of my favorite childhood movies, the secret garden. I appreciate art that represents the beauty of nature as well as rococo and this one of my favorites.
