Survey of social problems unit 7 discussion

 The discussion for this week will focus on prejudice and discrimination and how these concepts are related to race and ethnicity. Throughout unit 7, we examine social problems related to inequality. We learn how to distinguish between minority and dominant groups and how to explain why race is a social category and the concepts of institutional an unintended discrimination. Now unfortunately, we know that racism, prejudice, and discrimination exist within society. As human service professionals, it’s important that we understand the ramifications of racial inequality. How to identify it, whether it’s institutional or unintended, and learn how we can advocate for change. Furthermore, we have to become comfortable with having these difficult discussions. Topics surrounding racism, prejudice, and discrimination can be considered controversial and often bring feelings of fear and anxiety. However, in order to become a true ally and advocate against racial injustices, we must be prepared to lead these tough conversations. So for the Unit 7 discussion board, you’re going to respond to the following questions. First, define prejudice and explain how they are formed. Then describe how prejudices can impact individuals and society. Next, give information on the relationship between prejudice and discrimination and how these concepts are related to race and ethnicity. Finally, please discuss what you can do as a human service professional to combat prejudice and discrimination.
