Week 6 – Assignment: Select the Research Methods for a Proposed Study
Hide Folder InformationTurnitin™This assignment will be submitted to Turnitin™.Instructions
This week, you will write an essay where you explain and justify the methods you will use to generate and analyze data for a proposed study, ensuring appropriateness for educational research, at the same time ensuring that these methods align with your chosen research design that you explored last week.
In this assignment, less is not more! While your writing must be focused and concise, details are important and necessary so that your descriptions are not vague or insubstantial. Keep in mind that if any other researcher were to consider replicating your study, they would need to have a very clear understanding of your choice regarding research design considerations!
Throughout your discussion, as you explain all methods used, your approach must be systematic, logical, fully explained, and supported with scholarly sources. In addition to secondary sources, refer to seminal authors and primary sources as necessary.
Your essay will incorporate four parts:
1. Creating a research sample
2. Developing data collection methods
3. Planning data analysis techniques
4. Plans to address ethical considerations
After providing a brief introduction to familiarize the reader to the problem your suggested research will investigate, you will:
Provide an explanation and justification of sampling methods.
Describe how you will select your research participants. Refer to the literature to explain the process of sampling, including size of sample and criteria for inclusion. Be very specific. Use the following as a guide.
Describe purposeful or randomized sampling, as guided by your chosen research design. Substantiate your discussion with relevant scholarly citations. (1 paragraph)
Based on your sampling method (purposeful or randomized), explain your proposed sampling process step by step, offering clear details. (1 paragraph)
Explain the research population for your proposed study. Then go on to describe your research participant sample and how many research participants you will select and why. Sample size of the study population should be identified and must be appropriate and justified based on the nature of the study design. For quantitative studies you must be sure to include justified sample size determination. (1 paragraph)
Next, discuss data collection methods.
Discuss the data collection methods that you will use. Refer to the literature to describe the characteristics of each chosen method and the inherent strengths and limitations of each method. Use the following as a guide.
Discuss two or three methods of data collection that might apply to your proposed study. It is critical to remember that your methods of data collection must align with your chosen research design. Include in your discussion the strengths and possible limitations of each method. This serves to illustrate that you have done a critical reading of the literature, and that you acknowledge that data collection methods, although certainly useful, are not without disadvantages. Substantiate your discussion with relevant scholarly citations. (2 paragraphs)
Explain your reasons for choosing each of these methods. What kind of information would each method provide? If your proposed study is qualitative you will need to discuss the way in which you will try to achieve triangulation. (1 paragraph)
Explain one or two other alternative data collection methods that you may have considered. Offer reasons for why these would not be as good a fit as the options you selected above. Think critically! (1 paragraph)
Next, explain data analysis methods.
Explain your proposed method of data analysis. Be very specific and provide sufficient details so that another researcher who would like to replicate your study would be well informed of your analytic process. Refer to the literature and make sure to include and explain all technical terminology. Use the following as a guide. (1 paragraph)
Describe how data analysis differs between qualitative and quantitative research. What are the key analytic features of each design? Substantiate your discussion with relevant scholarly citations.
What is your proposed analytical approach? It is critical to remember that your method of data analysis, and the strategies that you use, must align with your chosen research design.
If you are considering a qualitative design, you need to select a method of analysis that aligns with qualitative research principles to ensure the integrity of the data. If you are considering a quantitative design, you will need to describe analytic methods used to ensure the integrity of the data. (1 paragraph)
Finally, present how you plan to address ethical considerations in your proposed study.
What is the main message conveyed in the Belmont report? Extract 2 brief segments or sections from the report to substantiate and explain your claim. (1 paragraph)
Explain the following four concepts: informed consent, assent, confidentiality, anonymity. Search the literature and include citations to support your explanations. (1-2 paragraphs).
Describe one or two strategies to you will use in your proposed study to address each of the necessary ethical requirements: informed consent/assent, confidentiality, and anonymity. (1-3 paragraphs)
Complete a sample consent form and upload this with your assignment this week. Craft the consent form to align with all aspects of your proposed study. This practical exercise is an opportunity to practice what you will need to include with an actual dissertation-in-practice research proposal.
Length: 6-8 pages, not including title and reference pages
References: Include a minimum of 10 scholarly resources
Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your work should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.
