Module 3 Project
Module 3 Project 🚧: Statistics and Normal Distribution 📊 Perform and analyze the statistics for an observational quantitate study of your choice. Step 1 Choose an observational quantitative study. (Some examples: What is the average height of SAC students?, How many times do SAC students check their email daily?, How many times do SAC students check Facebook in one day?) Be creative and think of a good quantitative study on your own. Step 2 Ask at least 30 subjects your question and record your data. (This is called raw data and you will use this for calculations, so it is important that your data is accurate, or your results could be skewed.) Be sure to attach your raw data to your project. Step 3 Create a frequency distribution. (You may need to use class intervals if you have a wide range of values and/or if you have no mode.) Step 4 Create a histogram for your data. A histogram can be created using ArtofStat. Step 5 Calculate the mean, range, and standard deviation. Interpret your results in context of your study without using the words “mean” and “standard deviation”. (You may use the word “average” for the mean in your interpretations.) Hint: The average height of SAC students is 62 inches give or take 4 inches with a range of 21 inches. Note, the mean is 62 inches, the standard deviation is 4 inches, and the range is 21 inches. Step 6 Find the five-number summary. 1 Step 7 Interpret the median in context of your study without using the word “median” in the interpretation. Hint: The median is the half-way mark of the data. Hence, half of the students are taller than 60 inches and the other half are shorter than 60 inches. Step 8 Draw a box plot. A boxplot can be created using ArtofStat. Step 9 Looking at your histogram, would you say your data has a normal distribution? Why or why not? Step 10 Despite your results from Step 9, let’s assume your data is normally distributed. Apply the 6895-99.7 Rule to determine the values in which 68%, 95%, and 99.7% of your data lie. Interpret your results in context of your study. Step 11 After collecting, describing, and analyzing your data, write a few sentences describing your conclusions from all your results. What can you conclude from your results above in context of your study? 2
