legalization of marijuana.
First, the topic is the same as everything else in this course: questions regarding the legalization of marijuana.
thesis: “Unveiling the Highs and Lows: A Comprehensive Analysis of Marijuana Legalization’s Impact on Society, Health, Economy, and Policy”
The specific requirements are laid out on the Assignments page, but I want to emphasize that it would be in your interest to begin your own research into this topic immediately. The Weekly Discussions will introduce videos, texts, etc, that raise certain issues, but you should be looking into the topic on your own throughout the semester. If you begin right away, you will already be preparing the Annotated Bibliography and the Research Paper because you will have read one or two sources a week and written a summary of them. This helps you avoid having to do all the work at the last minute, which often has negative consequences ranging from sloppy writing and/or incorrect MLA formatting to incomplete or missed assignments, which can be disastrous. So I encourage you to take responsibility for your work. If you do a little bit each week you won’t end up being overwhelmed and turning in work that doesn’t represent accurately your abilities.
MLA formatting is crucial. It’s not hard, but it does take a lot of time. And it’s picky—very precise, and for some temperaments this makes it difficult. But you still have to do it right. All the guidelines we will use for our class are found in the Purdue Owl webguide for MLA.
If you don’t take the time to read the sample Research Paper there, or read about in-text citations and the Works Cited page, about formatting the essay—you could easily run into some pretty devastating problems.
For instance, in-text citation is the method MLA uses to identify sources in the body of your Research Paper. If you don’t have in-text citations, then you haven’t identified the sources you used in your research to write the paper. This is plagiarism—even if you didn’t intend to be dishonest—and can lead to several consequences. First—you could get a 0 on the assignment. Second, you could fail the class. Third, you could be prevented from registering for any other HCC classes.
See the description on the syllabus and the Assignment page. Also—consult the Purdue Owl MLA Format guidelines on how to do In-Text Citations as well as how to format your Works Cited page. Read the sample Research Paper on their website. It is absolutely essential that you follow MLA formatting guidelines as they are presented on the PURDUE OWL.
More About the Research Paper
#1.
The paper is an argument in which you must take a position on some aspect of the topic: the questions surrounding the Legalization of Marijuana. You develop your argument using reasoning supported by materials from your research, integrated into your paper using MLA formatting guidelines. Your grade is based on three areas: grammatically correct/syntactically correct writing, the logical development of your argument, and correct MLA formatting. MLA formatting is a major part of your grade, regardless of your content. As always, email me with any questions you may have about this assignment.
#2.
You cannot use more than 3 sources from the links in our Weekly Discussions.
#3.
You must use at least 3 sources from Scholarly periodicals. Scholarly periodicals are journals that contained peer reviewed articles, which means other experts in the field have reviewed the article before it’s publication and found its methodology and content credible. (Credible does not mean that it’s not open to disagreement, only that there is a valid argument being made in terms of its reasoning and the methods of research).
Research Paper and Process: Students will produce a specific, unified, developed, organized, and coherent research paper of 1800-2400 words using at least EIGHT sources, both print and non-print. Students will show competency in a research paper process of choosing and narrowing topics, collecting sources from indexes, creating a working bibliography, taking notes from sources, using sources in proper MLA formats, and providing proper documentation for those sources. Sources must be credible and come from a variety of fields. You must include at least THREE SOURCES from scholarly periodicals. Other sources may include books, magazines, newspapers, websites, personal interviews, TV shows/documentaries etc.
The topic is the Legalization of Marijuana.
