Questions: US History survey classes are typically divided based on the Civil War or Reconstruction, with the first half covering up to 1865/67 and the second half covering 1865/67 to as close to the present time possible. As we get further and further from Reconstruction, it has become more and more challenging to fit everything into two sessions. It is time to add a 3rd US history course. Some historians argue that two sessions are insufficient to teach history to include modern-day events. Discuss why you think historians have agreed upon these set cutoff points. What other turning points in American history have historians emphasized or should emphasize? How might these other turning points influence where new American history surveys begin and end?
