I am glad about this opportunity to share my experience, specifically, regarding bias and chronic illness. I have ever experienced a situation where I felt the care given to me was not fair and the healthcare provider had prejudice. It was an ordinary day when I was accompanying my grandma to a routine visit to a local health facility. She suffers from a chronic heart disease which must be monitored regularly. At this specific visit, the doctor appeared biased toward my grandmother’s worries and was in a hurry during the exam. Grandma even though she stated that she experienced some discomfort which was irritating and unusual experiences, the physician failed to carry out a more exhaustive investigation and couldn’t help her and the physician only said that she was being affected by age and was a natural progression.
This experience confined me to a feeling of unhappiness and frustration in turn. The idea that my grandmother might have been downplayed or ignored simply because of her age and pre-existing health condition wouldn’t leave me regardless of how hard I tried to shake it. The encounter made me realize how much bias and injustice are hidden in our healthcare systems making the care of certain vulnerable patient populations even worse.
Reviewing this case, I realized I needed to be more concerned about prejudices of my own and the significance of defending equal and fair medical care for all the patients, who have long-term diseases. To me, it became a poignant reminder of the necessity to serve every patient equally, treating them with respect, and attention to detail irrespective of their age, race, gender, or medical condition.
As in a similar case, this situation could have been avoided or improved after by acting in different ways. First of all, the healthcare provider had to listen actively to my grandmother including her concerns and taking them seriously, performing examination to root out her symptoms. Also, cultural competency training can be given to the healthcare staff for them to understand their possible biases. As well, this can lead to the sensitivity of different patient populations. Similarly, the introduction of patient feedback and satisfaction surveys along with protocols for registries could provide a means of detecting and addressing cases of bias or unfairness in the healthcare environment.
The research by Gopal et al. (2021) shows the importance of medical care professionals’ bias that affects the delivery of quality health care. Their findings also emphasize how unconscious biases work to produce unequal treatment based on factors like ethnicity, race, or social economic status further exacerbating the situation in health care outcome disparities (Gopal et al., 2021).
I also noticed that even when health care providers do their best, they could show biases that may lead to differences in the quality of drugs they offer to minority patients. This study concludes that biases, which are usually hidden or unconscious, among healthcare providers are a matter that needs to be addressed.
Educating people about healthcare bias and instructing on various methods to reduce it is one of the most important aspects. Providing programs such as implicit bias awareness training and promoting cultural fair will increase the delivery of unbiased and fair care for patients (Vela et al., 2022). Through the recognition of bias and the biased results of healthcare disparities, healthcare providers can make the active efforts to combat inequities by assuring that all patients receive the same level of care.
Becoming equipped for Week 2, I will hold interviews with my clinical preceptor or a more senior employee from my clinic site so as to be informed about the processes the site has put in place for fair healthcare of diverse patients. For this matter, I will find out about training, regulations and policies addressing provider bias and healthcare justice, as well as the approaches to taking bias away. By having this session, I expect to get practical suggestions coming from recent studies, considering the possible difficulties and success measures.
