RWS 200Essay3: Advancing an Argument in the Contemporary Context
At this point, you have encountered a number of different theories that consider the nature of good
and evil from a variety of viewpoints, including de Waal’s “Survival of the Kindest: Of Selfish Genes
and Unselfish Dogs,” Plato’s excerpt from the Phaedrus, book VII from Augustine’s Confession’s, J. R.
R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, Battacharjee’s article, “The science behind psychopaths and
extreme altruists,” Nyarombe, et. al., “The Understanding of the concept of Evil in African Moral
Thought . . .” article,” and the film, The Black Panther. These last two texts will allow us to consider the
rhetoric of marginalized communities.
For this assignment, you will use ideas from those texts to position yourself in the debate and join the
conversation by formulating and supporting an account of your own about the nature of good and
evil. This account will certainly, like the other arguments, be in part a product of the context within
which you live, so for this paper, you will want to consider aspects of contemporary life as a context
within which to develop your theory.
Each paragraph of your essay should advance a claim of your own about some aspects of good or
evil. Consider the claims we have discussed for each text this semester and join the conversation by
placing the claim you are making into the context of the texts from the class. Position your argument
in relation to those texts, considering how your argument extends, challenges, or transforms, etc. the
ideas from those texts, or how they extend, etc. your argument. (Each paragraph should join the
conversation with at least one of the claims from the texts. The essay should use two texts read for
paper 1 & 2 and use Nyarombe, et. al., the film, The Black Panther, and Battacharjee’s article, “The
science behind psychopaths and extreme altruists.”
Finally, each paragraph should develop and support your claim with the use of various types of
evidence, including specific examples, both from your own experience and the experience of others
from cultural or artistic texts, from current or historical events, or from other writers and scholars. A
strong argument would use a variety of types of evidence. As you craft this argument, be mindful of
the effect of your strategies on your intended reader; how would this argument appeal to their sense
of logic, to their emotions and to their values? Would it persuade them that you are a credible source?
Page length: Five pages, MLA format.
