Use the two readings provided this week, the internet and the chapter to share an example of working health education into academic subjects for middle school students.

Grade level: 2nd grade (you will have middle school)
Standard: 1.7.N Identify a variety of healthy snacks.
Academic Topic: Spelling
Activity with Action!: I will make a giant “bingo” board with carpet squares on the floor. The squares will each be filled with a picture of a food (fruit, veggies, healthy snacks and less nutritious snack foods). Each picture will have a corresponding spelling word lightly taped up on the wall. Kids will have bean bags to toss and take turns. When they hit a square, tthe student find the matching spelling word of the picture. The whole class has to spell the word out loud and do a jumping jack for each letter. For example, a-p-p-p-l-e would be 5 jumping jacks! . The teacher then asks if the food is an “anytime food or a special time food”. (It is not recommended to do “good” and “bad” foods any more due to eating disorders (4)) If everyone gets it right, the square is checked off. This repeats until bingo is given.

Academic Topic: Crossword Puzzle
Activity with Action: Students will try finding out what fruit/ vegetable is needed to be written in the correct number column. There could be different types of crosswords such as physical crossword, healthy snack/ protein/ nutrition food/ carbohydrate/and more. Others can be fitness and health related fruits and veggies. As an idea, to start off with an easy crossword, it can end in numbers up to 10 or 15. The more knowledgeable the students get the more they get to a higher level crossword puzzle that may need more time to finish. Yet of course, this can be done in groups (even or odd numbers). The higher level worksheet completed within 20 minutes, gets an extra 10 minutes of free play.
