In this essay assignment, you will critically analyse the role of digital media in shaping and mediating populist discourse in the public sphere. You will explore how digital platforms influence the dissemination of populist messages, these platforms’ influence on public opinion and the dynamics of political participation in the digital era. By drawing on both contemporary research and recent sources, you will disentangle the complex interplay between populism, digital media, and the public sphere.
You are required to incorporate contemporary examples of populist movements leveraging digital media in the public sphere. For instance, the rise of the QAnon conspiracy movement and its dissemination through virtual platforms such as social media and online forums, illustrate how digital media can amplify populist narratives and mobilise followers. Similarly, the use of digital tools by political figures like Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil or Matteo Salvini in Italy provide rich case studies of the ways in which populist leaders harness digital media to connect directly with their base, circumventing traditional media gatekeepers and, as a result, shape public discourse.
In addition, you should reflect on the evolving nature of digital technologies, considering advancements such as AI, data analytics and deepfake technology, and their potential (or real) impact on the public sphere. As digital platforms continue to evolve, it is essential to critically assess their role in shaping public discourse and democratic processes, and to find strategies for promoting transparency, accountability and civic engagement in the digital age. You must also integrate a personal perspective into the essay to complement the evidence you provide form scholarly sources.
Sources: You must use a minimum of six sources, four of which must be scholarly sources (including at least one course reading). At least two of your sources must have been published in 2022/2023/2024.
