The Forensic Challenge represents the culmination of your learning this semester. It is as faithful a recreation of an actual case as we can manage without a complicated production. This assignment covers multiple devices and multiple subjects, and so there is a tremendous amount of information to examine. In fact, there is far more than a single person could hope to examine in the time you are expected to devote to this course.
That is why we also take a more realistic approach to this assignment. It’s not typical for an examiner to work alone. Normally, a lab is broken into three roles:
Investigators: Investigators are crime scene specialists that do the acquisition. Sometimes these are trained police officers, sometimes they are forensic specialists.
Examiners: Examiners work in the lab to establish relevance and extract evidence. That is the majority of the work in this class.
- Analysts: Analysts run those same tests to verify the results, and convey the findings to people outside the team. Checking the team’s work ensures accuracy and integrity.

- To successfully complete this assignment, you will each be required to submit at least one forensic report and your group will submit a single case report.
For this assignment, you will be working in groups. To successfully complete this assignment, you will each be required to submit at least one (1) forensic report. That means each member will submit their own report, and each report should be on a different evidence item.
