Conflict theory and its relation with racism Racism occurs as a result of inequality due to unequal distribution of resources. The conflict theory was developed by Karl Marx to show how human beings scramble for limited resources in society. Where there is inequality, certain groups are favored and prioritized while others suffer without being considered as equal members. This leads to a reaction that affects peaceful integration in society. Individuals strive to increase their wealth and power and this leads to creation of dominant and minority groups in a society. In the long-run, the minorities suffer because they lack equal opportunities and resources to compete with the dominant groups leading to negative reactions that disrupt peaceful coexistence among people. Theory summary The conflict theory was developed by Karl Marx and it shows how society takes shape from competition for the limited resources. Karl argued that at any given time, the society comprises people from different groups and classes that are constantly competing for power and resources (Berberoglu, 2017). The dominant group always has the power and ability to control the distribution of resources. The minorities lack power and accept the will and direction of the ruling elites because they have the final say in terms of how resources will be distributed. In a capitalist economy, the dominant group grows wealth at the expense of the working class because they can control markets and favor themselves when it comes to access to opportunities. The theory outlines that the changes observed in the society we live in are as a result of conflict and not gradual evolution. The theory analyzes society from the dimensions of the status quo. Everything that makes up society is developed by the dominant group in order to maintain its influence, power and increase wealth. For example, governments are created by the dominant groups to rule and implement their desires with ease. According to Jost, (2020), the dominant groups use ideologies to justify their access to power and privileges. For example, religion and nationalism are used to show the minority group there is an aspect of shared identity between the two groups whereas in reality, the dominant group is only using it to champion their interests. The theory outlines war as a unifier or a cleanser. A unifier means that the people causing conflict will be forced to accept the will of the majority and end their struggle towards certain privileges. A cleanser is a justification of behavior and will eliminate questioning from the minority groups. Therefore, there will be adaptation that the resources are always limited and there are people who should have access to them regardless of how limited they are. Social Problem/Issue The conflict theory can be directly linked with racism because it shows how the dominant groups enjoy access to things at the expense of the poor. Racism refers to the unequal share of resources and unequal opportunities for people based on race. Racism affects peaceful coexistence among people by inflicting anger and sadness in people. This leads to depression that affects the mental health and physical well-being of an individual. The affected groups live in fear of being verbally insulted and ridiculed and this affects their socializing behavior.it also reduces trust as people view any member who does not belong to their family as a threat to their peace. Racism affects societies because it kills trust and respect that people have for one another. Where there is no respect, there cannot be peaceful co-existence and this affects productivity of the people. In the long-run, the country is affected through creation of conflicting groups with divergence goals. In schools, students subjected to racism end up performing poorly and this affects their lives. It creates a culture of problems that affects all groups that are classified as minorities in the community. Competing ideas Racism and conflict theory appears to be one and the same thing because they single out the minority groups. Color is used as a dividing factor that directs privileges to the majority groups. The majority groups rarely view their behavior as a cause of conflict and uproar in the society. For instance, during instances of recession in the United States, people of color are viewed as outsiders and main contributors to economic problems. However, when there is a boom, recognition is directed to the white majority regardless of the efforts people of color play to ensure the economy stabilizes. Theory Application The effects or racism are as a result of conflict in the society. Where people are ridiculed and subjected to unjust policies, they end up developing negative attitudes towards those in power. Conflict theory shows how the dominant group uses power to increase wealth and control. The group uses ideologies to justify to the people that they are one and the same thing whereas they are planning for their misfortunes. For example, religion is used to being all people together for a common purpose. However, the sermon is not implemented in reality because the same people are divided based on color when it comes to employment, compensation and promotion in their respective places of work Conclusion Conflict theory shows how competition and scramble for resources shapes society. There is a relation between racism and conflict theory because both of them have class issues. The dominant group have access to power and resources whereas the dominant groups suffer to access the privileges the dominant group have. References Berberoglu, B. (2017). Term Paper: Theory Application
Typically, theory application assignments require students to examine some sort of
observed phenomena or real-world condition/happening. This is a common analytical writing
assignment in social science programs.
Students will write a theory application term paper. Within this paper, apply a theory or
paradigm from the textbook an existing real-world condition. In other words, clearly discuss a
social problem from the perspective of the theory. The writing should demonstrate a clear
understanding of the chosen theory/paradigm. The theory should be applied in a logical fashion.
While writing, think of this project as the beginning of a research proposal.
How to Apply Theory
Commonly, the first step is to be sure you understand the theory that you are going to
apply. You are expected to demonstrate an accurate and concise understanding of the chosen
theory and frame the social problem. The final draft of the term paper will follow the
organization below.
Content and Organization
1. The first step is to develop a hook to draw in the reader.
2. Then, provide a brief overview of the paper, what you will tell the audience.
3. Finally, end with a thesis statement regarding the relationship between the theory and the
social problem/issue.
a. This will guide the direction of the paper and inform the reader about the topic.
b. Be sure the introduction provides a foundation for the thesis and grabs the interest
of the reader.
4. The second step is to discuss the concepts of the theory of interest clearly and concisely.
a. This information would be obtained from the class readings and additional
materials as needed.
b. This section should focus on the theory only.
i. Do not discuss any other aspect here.
ii. Use section headings to keep the paper well-structured and clear.
iii. Use citations
5. After a clear discussion of the theory content, summarize the key parts/components of
your social problem.
a. Your social problem must come from a verified source (Not that one person on
Facebook)
b. Just provide the important details about the social problem/issue.
c. Provide contrasting views on the problem/issue.
d. Leave out bias and focus on the facts.
i. The audience should not be able to sense any bias or recognize the
author’s ideological directions.
e. Use citations from the social problem sources
6. Connect/analyze the concepts of the theory to the components of the problem.
a. This should not be your opinion but how the theory and problem would be
connected…
i. What would the father/mother of the paradigm say about the event?
ii. How would the founders of the theory describe and connect this event to
their own theory?
b. In other words, explain the connection.
c. Think of
i. What makes this problem and this theory connected? Explain that to the
audience.
7. The paper should end with a conclusion summarizing your main points.
a. Consider the insights you want the reader to understand, and
b. What the reader should remember.
8. The paper must cover all of the above points and include
a. Cite the sources using ASA guidelines
i. The Chicago Manual of Style online
ii. Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL)
b. Include an ASA formatted reference page.
c. Include an ASA formatted student title/cover page.
d. Do not use any personal pronouns.
e. Write clearly and concisely without grammar, punctuation, or other mechanical
errors.
f. Must use terminology content from the theory
Grading
The paper will be five pages in length, not including the title and reference pages. The paper will
be double-spaced, 12-point font and Times New Roman. Review the rubric in Canvas for
grading details.
