For your final assignment in WRD 206, you will complete a collection of job search writing materials. This group of materials will include a submitted job posting, a job rhetorical analysis, a resume, and a cover letter. These dimensions of the assignment are described below.
JOB RHETORICAL ANALYSIS WORKSHEET RESPONSE
I’d suggest that you begin with the job rhetorical analysis. Find an advertisement or job posting for a position you would stand a reasonable chance of getting were you to apply either today or at graduation, and analyze it fully. This job should be in sync with your level of experience, skill set and aspirations. Once you find the ad, read it critically and try to articulate what seem to be the most meaningful dimensions of the candidate they’re seeking, whether stated or implied. What hard and soft skills do they seek? Use the job analysis worksheet to help you develop your analysis. You can find a sample job analysis here.
RESUME
After you’ve completed your analysis, design a resume that draws from meaningful dimensions of your background in an attempt to meet the needs of the posted job. You have full range over the dimensions of your resume that you emphasize, and choices that you make. The main objective here is that the resume make its decisions in keeping with the needs and desires expressed in the job advertisement. In other words, try to scale your resume to match the moment.
LETTER OF APPLICATION
Write a letter of application to your chosen company, using the conventions and recommendations we’ve discussed in class. Again, be sure your letter of application is calibrated to the needs of the rhetorical moment.
This set of documents will be due during finals week, at the end of our university final exam period.
