Stapleton, S. (2017). Qualifying choice: ethical reflection on the scope of prenatal screening. Med Health Care and Philos, 20:195–205.
When considering the directive framework for prenatal screening, what ethical considerations are present if a provider reveals the child will suffer from severe disability and non-palliative pain? Do these promotions by healthcare providers to do prenatal screening do more harm than good for the parents and/or the child?
The result of prenatal screening can potentially reveal choices to parents about their future child which can lead to a termination of pregnancy. For parents who are selective about non severe or fatal disorders, such as gender, minor abnormalities, or cosmetic traits, should prenatal screening be offered to every pregnancy? Are there appropriate or non-appropriate times for prenatal screening to be offered? Would the issue of distributive justice be present if prenatal screening is not offered to parents seeking information about their future child unrelated to suspicion of severe or fatal disorders?
Discussion #2: Forensic genealogy is the use of genetic data collected by private companies for investigation of crimes. Please read the very short Berkman et al. (2018) article in the module for this week. Then, comment on what type of ethical concerns this practice raises and whether you think the use of genetic information for criminal investigations is ethical (or what would need to be ensured to make it ethical.)
