Immigration Policies: The United States is often referred to as the ‘melting pot’. A large percentage of the country is a collection of immigrants. Many people who are aware of their family history, know of a family member who came to America from another country. For some this was generations ago, and others only a few years ago. Immigrants from all over the world are able to enter the U.S. in search of a new life. American views on freedom and equality have often opened the doors for immigrants. On the other hand, sometimes that door has been shut due to fear, rasicm, and discrimination. Read about a few United State’s policies on immigration that did not exemplify freedom and equality.
Read what President Biden said regarding the action of banning citizens from select countries coming to the United States, “Those actions are a stain on our national conscience and are inconsistent with our long history of welcoming people of all faiths and no faith at all.”
Economic Policies:
The United States will use their economic power by placing sanctions or embargoes on other nations. One example of this was the U.S. Trade embargo with Cuba. Before Fidel Castro came into power in 1959, the United States was heavily involved in the economy of Cuba. When Castro’s communist government took control, they nationalized most of these corporations. This angered the United States and in return put into place a trade embargo with Cuba with the hopes of crippling the Cuban government.
Technology Research: The United States has often led the world in certain technological areas.

How do other nations’ policies affect the U.S.?Terrorism: Often times when acts of terrorism occur in one country, other countries may change their security policies.
London Subway bombing: On July 7th, 2005, the London transit system was bombed in 4 separate attacks. 52 people died from these explosions and over 700 people were injured. After this incident, the Washington D.C. subway system enacted a policy called “See it, Say it”. The goal of this policy was for people to call a counter-terrorism hot line if they noticed anything they deemed might be terrorist activity. Sometimes the results of a particular policy do not always match the intention. The policy did little to stop terrorism. Bruce Schneier, a lecturer at Harvard’s Kennedy School, pointed out, “If you ask amateurs to act as front-line security personnel, you shouldn’t be surprised when you get amateur security. People don’t need to be reminded to call the police; the slogan is nothing more than an invitation to report people who are different.”
