Rhetorical Analysis of TED TALKS
For this essay you will apply the Aristotelian appeals (ethical (ethos), logical (logos), and emotional (pathos) to the rhetoric of two TED TALKS. While there are similarities in their rhetorical approaches, there are also some differences.
Your final task (by 05.25.2024) is to complete the following:
In a multi-paragraph essay (the future assignment, not this one), you will write a reasoned position on which speech is more rhetorically effective in appealing to the intended audience.
THEME: “ORGANIC FOOD”
Tastily Organic!
Watch the first TED TALK: “Back to Basics: An Argument for Organic Food Food.” Presenter Daniela Garabito Silva.

Watch the second TED TALK: Why is organic food so *#@! expensive?? Presenter Ali Partov.

Your first step: watch the TED TALKS and write two brief summaries of the speakers’ arguments (not the summaries of their speeches!) Again: Do not write the summaries of the stories! Explain what the speakers are arguing about; what their main claims are about.
Your second step is to create a formal outline.
Outline includes: A and B
A. Introduction.
Write four sentences:
1. what is the topic both speakers are trying to discuss? and why does it matter to certain people (targeted audience)?
2. describe what the speakers’ central arguments, main claims are.
3. what is the preliminary purpose of your future project (inform, convince, argue)?
4. what is your preliminary thesis statement/claim that establishes your reasoned position on which speech is more effective in appealing to the intended audience (value, policy, fact). You should mention the Aristotelian appeals, asserting your evaluation of each appeals effectiveness (ethos, logos, pathos).
B. Topic sentences for your future Body Paragraphs.
Each topic sentence should include a statement: which speech is more effective from one of the following approaches: ethical, logical, and emothional (ethos, logos, pathos). Read about ethos, logos, and pathos and watch tutorials.
1. a topic sentence (the first body paragraph) is addressing the ethical appeal (ethos) in both talks. Who is more effective?
2. a topic sentence (the second body paragraph) is addressing the logical appeal (logos) in both talks. Who is more effective?
3. a topic sentence (the third body paragraph) is addressing the emotional appeal (pathos) in both talks. Who is more effective?
Before you write the topic sentences, identify Strategies (to analyze the effectiveness of Aristotelian appeals (ethical (ethos), logical (logos), and emotional (pathos) in two TED TALKS). Take notes! You will use these notes in TED TALKS PROJECT later.
