GLST 290 ETHNOGRAPHIC INTERVIEW: ANALYSIS AND REFLECTION ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS OVERVIEW This assignment is the final assignment of the Ethnographic Interview series and should be completed after the interview because it requires content from the interview. This assignment will contain an analysis of the interview findings, a reflection on your role as the researcher, and a discussion on how you might apply ethnographic research to your field of study or ministry. The assignment must include analysis using Cultural Anthropology concepts from the Howell and Paris textbook and other scholarly sources used in your research this term. While this assignment builds on concepts gained through the previous Ethnographic Interview series assignments, the content for this paper should not be copied from previous assignments. The interview findings will show how the research findings are perceived by the interviewee and will either confirm or show another perspective based on the interviewee’s experience. The analysis should be new based on the interview findings. This is the final of four assignments of the Ethnographic Interview series. INSTRUCTIONS The paper should include the following 6 sections and these section headings can be used as the section headings in the paper. This paper should present the concepts from the perspective of the interviewee and also weave in research findings. 1. Introduction: Briefly describe the interviewee’s background, religion, and cultural context. Describe how you prepared for the interview and the interview (setting and anything that stood out as noteworthy). 2. Worldview: Describe the beliefs that influence the interviewee’s values and practices. What does the interviewee believe about God and humanity? How do these beliefs impact their values and practices? 3. Cultural Values and Practices: Describe the interviewee’s cultural values and practices relating to societal, marital, and familial relationships and communication within the community and with outsiders. Why are these values significant and how do they impact the interviewee’s approaches to relationships? 4. Conflict: Show how the interviewee’s values, beliefs, and practices impact their interactions with people from other cultures. How has or how might the interviewee’s rationale lead to conflict when engaging people from other cultures and how might they resolve these conflicts? **If the interviewee said they have not experienced conflict with people from other cultures, use your research on this culture to discuss the potential conflict that could arise as a result of their values, beliefs, and practices. 5. Reflection: How did your knowledge of the anthropological perspective, participant observation, and rapport impact the interview and this analysis? What role did the research conducted before the interview play in the interview process? How did the pre-interview research and your personal worldview impact your perception of how the interviewee might respond to the questions prepared before the interview? Were there any surprises? Page 1 of 2 GLST 290 6. Conclusion: So, what? How might you apply the ethnographic interview process to interactions in your field of study or ministry? Briefly discuss one concept that could be applied in your context and show how you would apply it. Incorporating Cultural Anthropology concepts from the course textbooks and other scholarly sources is required throughout this analysis. Example: If you found that the interviewee’s communication practices play a significant role in their ability to communicate with people in their own community and with people from other cultures, you may make the connection to Howell and Paris’ discussion on language in Chapter 3 of the textbook. Describe the interviewee’s communication practices and how the practices impact the interviewee’s interactions with others. Incorporate the concepts from Howell and Paris to help expand/explain elements described from the interview. If the interviewee code-switches in their communication with others, weave in Howell and Paris’ insight on the topic and show how the use of codeswitching impacts the interviewee’s ability to communicate with others. This same method may be used for incorporating research findings from other research sources into the paper. The assignment must be written as a formal paper and not as a transcript of the interview.
