Case Study: Haiti

Weight: 10% of final grade

Instructions:

Read the two opinion pieces about the current humanitarian and political crisis in Haiti. One opinion piece is by Lydia Polgreen, published in the New York Times . The other piece is by Colbert King, published in the Washington Post .

Write a response essay discussing the crisis in Haiti and responding to the opinion pieces provided. You can either refute their arguments, provide a justification supporting one argument or the other, discuss their limitations, and/or elaborate on their merits. You may adopt any position in your response. Your grade will not be based on the position you choose. Rather, your grade will consider the strength of your analysis, your ability to articulate how the case fits with the topics discussed in the course, your writing skills, and your critical thinking abilities.

Your essay should be around 400 to 600 words. Please cite every source that you use in your essay. Citations and references do not count towards the word limit.

Avoid plagiarism. My policy is to report students who incur in plagiarism, even if unintentional, to the Center for Students Rights and Responsibilities. If you do not know how to avoid plagiarism, look for resources at the library and the writing center. Not knowing is not an excuse.

There is a 10% penalty per day on essays submitted after the deadline. Please know, however, that I grant generous extensions as long as they are negotiated at least 24 hours prior to the deadline. If a student misses a deadline and wishes to “stop the clock” of the 10% penalty, they should contact me as soon as possible.
