History Question
Please read these instructions closely.
Write an essay that addresses the exam prompt below, adhering to the following guidelines.
Length: However many pages that are necessary to fully address the assignment. (Minimum–4 typed pages, excluding the cover page, but more will likely be necessary for a complete answer).
Format: Times, 12-point font, one-inch margins, double-spaced, cover page (include name, essay title, course number, due date).
Citations: Use parenthetical citations that include the author’s name and page number when you quote or paraphrase texts: for example, (Openstax, 221). For primary sources simply identify the document: for example, (Mencius Document). Be sure to use the PDF of the textbook for citations rather than the online version which doesn’t include page numbers.
Sources: Limit your analysis to the material you have studied in the weekly modules. DO NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES!
Late Submissions: Late exams will be penalized 5% per day. If you need extra time, contact me before the deadline.
Expectations: Since this is essentially a take home midterm essay examination, the quality of the writing counts. Be sure to read the writing tips that are posted in the Midterm Assessment Module to understand expectations for the structure of the essay.
You will be graded on 4 criteria: 1) thesis statement, introduction, and conclusion; 2) organization and structure; 3) use of sevidence, examples, and content to support your analysis; and 4) writing mechanics and style.
Assignment: Classical states and societies, which flourished roughly between 500 BCE and 500 CE, were built on the social, economic, and political foundations of earlier complex societies. What features were common to the foundation and evolution of the states and societies of Persia, India, China, and the Mediterranean Basin? What explains their differences where they existed? Did these classical states face any similar challenges? If so, how did they manage them? In your analysis you may wish to consider government administration, religion, trade & economics, and social structure. Feel free to include other categories of analysis, provided you also include supporting evidence.
Use only evidence from the course modules for this essay exam. Outside sources should not be used and will not be accepted.
Begin your essay with an analytical thesis that addresses these questions. Go on to develop evidence from Openstax and the course material, including relevant primary sources, to support your thesis. You are not expected to include all evidence from the course but do judiciously employ the best pieces of specific evidence that support your argument.
