For the past 10 weeks, we have examined the history and sociology of the U.S. immigration

experience. For the class project, you will have the opportunity to do a project that is focused on

the immigration experience in Los Angeles. Broadly speaking, you can choose to be inspired by

Takaki’s A Different Mirror and write a history of a specific immigrant group. Over the years,

students have written about the history of Armenians, Italians, Japanese, Mexicans, Jews,

Persians, and other groups in Los Angeles and Southern California. Other students have relied on

Portes and Rumbaut’s Immigrant America and have written on contemporary issues in immigrant

communities in Southern California. On this front, students have written about the sociology of

ethnic enclaves, the political mobilization of immigrant communities, and the impact of

immigrants on specific cities and neighborhoods ranging from Canoga Park to Irvine. In addition

to academic research papers, students have written photo essays of immigrant communities that

capture two to three themes in A Different Mirror and Immigrant America.

Minimum Specifications:

 The class project should be a minimum of 2,000 words.

 The class project should incorporate at least four high-quality academic and journalistic

sources.

 The class project should follow the MLA Style (9th Edition).
