Final Exam: Film Analysis and Video Presentation
Filmmakers have long considered the environmental consequences of human behavior, imagined ecological changes on local and global scales, explored catastrophic failures of resource management, and told all kinds of other planetary and environmental stories. Sometimes, these themes are central to a film’s story. In the best ones, such elements underlie a well-written narrative that tells a gripping story about personal relationships, challenges the way we think, or expands our views of the human experience.
For this assignment, you will locate an academic ecocritical article on a film, show, or videogame with an environmental/sustainable theme and use it to construct a video presentation.
To be clear, I am not asking for you to develop any original ideas. I am asking you to carefully paraphrase an article/portion of an article in your own words with video elements.
Platform: Google Slides, Powerpoint (or any program that allows you to record a presentation).
Length:
Speaking time: 10-15 minutes
Video clip time: 30 seconds minimum
What to include:
Introduction:
A summary of the film (no longer than 3 minutes)
An “eco-critical” interpretation of the film
Your source’s main point; the eco-critical theme or point of analysis
Body:
- Discussion of scholarly work. Do not just read the article over your presentation. Paraphrase/summarize in your own words.
Scenes/other evidence that supports your paraphrased material (well explained).
Conclusion:
- A brief evaluation of the author – who are they? What is their field of study? What else have they published? Etc.
