“One man’s utopia is another man’s dystopia.”-
A dystopian vision is often a futuristic society that has developed into a negative vision of a utopia. An authoritarian or totalitarian form of government often, but not always, characterizes a dystopia. It also features different kinds of repressive social control systems, a lack or total absence of individual freedoms and expressions and a state of constant warfare.
Your task is to create an original dystopian society and present an outline of the world you create in the form of a PowerPoint or Google Slide presentation.
It should be organized, detailed, and have a cohesive aesthetic appeal and design.
Images can be printed graphics or images pulled from the internet, original photos, and/or neatly drawn on UNLINED paper. Please be mindful that these images needed to be scanned.

You will need to be creative and thoughtful in coming up with a fictional place that is intended to be prefer, but has gone wrong. You must create a citizen of this society that will be the protagonist of your project/story. This citizen should realize that the society is wrong and should try to shine a light on the problems.
As you think about your project, I invite you to use the works we read and watch for class as an inspiration. If you are stumped in terms of ideas, consider doing an adaptation of one of those works or other dystopian works you are familiar with. Perhaps you create story from a different perspective or point of view, or create an alternative ending. Perhaps you change details of the backstory, or you make a prequel or sequel to something. The works can offer you different ways to think about the dystopian/utopian genre.
Project Requirements:
Each element should be allocated 1-3 slides. Please do not clutter your slides with a lot of text. The text should be clear, concise, and concrete. Avoid contrasting color and font combinations that hinder reading. Each slide should be clearly titled with the requirement it represents. Make sure to utilize visuals and show me, don’t just tell me about the world you are creating
Backstory: A dystopian society has a backstory: a war, natural disaster, or other significant event is introduced early in the story to set the stage. Describe, in detail, the back-story of how your dystopian society came to exist.
Setting: Describe the setting of your story. What does the place look like and where do the citizens live? What do the buildings, homes, cars, etc. look like? What year is it?
Map: Provide a map (colored/illustrated) of your community, country, town, or society.
Rights: Create a Bill of Rights and include at least 10 rules that the people in your society must live by. This must be created to look like a document tat would fit your society as a poster for display.
Traditions and Customs: Describe and explain at least 5 different traditions and customs of your society.
Propaganda: Create an informational text from the government of your society. This can be a letter, memo, brochure, etc.
Government: Describe the government in your dystopia. What kind of government exists? Who is charge? How does the government operate and how is power transferred?
Citizens: Describe the average citizens in your dystopia. What do they wear? Describe their appearance. What do they do for a living. Do they have children? How do they behave on a daily basis? What do they do for fun? How do they respond to the government?
Social Structure: Describe and explain the social structure of your society.
Infractions: What happens to citizens who do not obey the government?
Education: Describe the schools in your dystopia. What do students learn? What do they do at school? What do they wear? How do they behave?
Protagonist: You will need a protagonist in your story. The protagonist is the central character in your story. This protagonist will at some point recognize that there is something wrong with the society and risk their life to do whatever they can to improve it Describe the protagonist. Give them a name, age, occupation, etc. Clearly articulate their concern about society and what they will do to save the society from itself.
Antagonist: You will need a antagonist in your story. The antagonist is the central opposition to the protagonist. Describe the antagonist. Give them a name, age, occupation, etc. Clearly articulate their concern about society and what they will do to save the society from itself.
Supporting characters: Include at least 2 supporting characters. Give them names, ages, occupations, etc. Clearly articulate their concerns about society and what they will do to either save society or keep the status quo.
Monologue, speech, or diary entry: Create a monologue, speech, or diary entry in the voice of your protagonist expressing their feelings about a significant event that happen in the society you have created. You must make up this event and thoroughly explain it in the monologue, speech, or diary entry.
Reflection**: This element is an opportunity to explain your project and your creative process. Notes that the reflection counts more than the other elements and should be written in detail and address the following questions:
What dystopian works inspired your project? Why? How? Be specific.
Name and describe the dystopian characteristics and controls featured in your project. Be specific.
Describe your creative process. What was hard and easy about this project? Why? Be specific.
What are you most proud of in terms of your project?
What have you learned about the value of the dystopian/utopian stories? Be specific.
