Wellness Question
Assignment 3 – Mental and Emotional Wellness Due Date: April 28th by 11:59 PM Purpose: Mental health is critical to leading a happy and healthy life. In fact, a sound body needs a sound mind to operate. Sadly, the importance of mental health is ignored or diminished because it can be a difficult subject to discuss or dive in to. In order to decrease the stigma around mental illness and take the best care of ourselves, we must make mental and emotional wellness a priority. Part 1– Stigma (5 points) The more we open up and talk about mental health, the better we can understand its impacts. Unfortunately, there is still some stigma about mental health. What is stigma? Stigma describes negative beliefs and attitudes about people with mental illnesses. Mental health stigma can lead some people to be prejudiced against, avoid, fear, or reject others because they suffer from a mental condition. It is a form of disrespect, and often makes it more difficult for individuals to seek the help they need to get better. Adapted from SAMHSA 2004 Stigma can lead to problems for individuals with mental health conditions, including finding support from family and friends, seeking help from professionals, and experiencing feelings of low self-esteem, self-doubt and low self-worth. Now that you have learned more about mental and emotional wellness, please answer the following questions. 1. Why do you think there is still stigma around individuals with mental illnesses? Is it easy or difficult for you to discuss aspects of your mental and emotional wellness? What has made it easy or more difficult? This is to be written in a question and answer format with developed answers being at least four to six sentences each. 2. List at least three examples of mental health stigma in society today.
