How do traditional leadership theories impact organizational culture compared to adaptive leadership?
1 Adaptive Leadership Student’s Name Institution Course Date 2 Adaptive Leadership Leadership is one of the most pivotal abilities in the organizations and specifically in the environment of constant change. Leadership theories have been in existence for the longest time to address the changing and evolving nature of business environment. One theory that has gained more relevance in recent times is the adaptive leadership. This view maintains the importance of leaders’ ability to adapt to different situations, to promote innovation, and to sail through the complex challenges. In this essay I will compare and contrast the adaptive leadership theory with transformational leadership, a widely recognized theory, and showcase how the adaptive leadership model can be applied to address an issue in a Saudi Arabian organization. Adaptive leadership is a leadership theory that highlights the leader’s capacity to successfully react and respond to the fast-paced and unpredictable environment. Agile leaders are able to understand that problems and challenges that require applying adaptive approach (Northouse, 2021). They embrace continuous learning, experimentation, and are ready for adapting to the changing conditions. Fostering this type of leadership encourages follower employees to take up initiatives of taking responsibility instead of solely relying on their leaders for guidance and solution generation (Yaghi, 2017). In contrast, the transformational leadership theory focuses on the transformative power of the leader as an individual and his capacity to inspire and motivate the team to achieve remarkable results (Northouse, 2021c). Transformational leaders usually are charismatic and vision-driven, and they work on the formation of shared values and the forging of a common goal among their teams of followers. Thus, the two theories complement each other in understanding and practicing effective leadership in today’s dynamic and unpredictable world. 3 Furthermore, the adaptive leadership, particularly leader behaviors can be applied especially in Petro Rabigh, a Saudi Arabian organization that is engaged to in the business of refining and marketing of petrochemicals and hydrocarbons. Leadership behavior is describes key leader behaviors, for example “getting on the balcony”, “recognizing adaptive challenges” and “regulating stress” (Northhouse, 2021b). “Getting to the balcony” demonstrates the leader’s capability to detach from the current environment to obtain the bigger picture. Stepping back from the daily tasks helps leaders understand the problems better, see the patterns and underlying issues to develop a clearer idea of the organizational challenges (Northouse, 2021a). On the flip side, “recognizing adaptive challenges” is about spotting the complicated, long-term challenges that require adaptive solutions (Northouse, 2021a). Finally, “regulating distress” refers to the leader’s role in managing the emotional and psychological impact of change and uncertainty (Northouse, 2021a). Leaders should offer help and support to the teams and employees who are found to be in distress. Consequently, Petro Rabigh, which has experienced a 56% decline of profits due to poor markets (Arab News, 2024) can benefit from leader behaviors. The organization leader (s) can pull back from day-to-day activities and then step in to have a wider view of the market situation and the developments that affect the profitability of Petro Rabigh. Through the studying of the external factors affecting the organization, like oil price fluctuations or shifts in customer demands, the leader can get a clear source of the profit drop. After having obtained a thorough consideration of the changes, the leader then determines the adaptive challenges emanating from Petro Rabigh. Also, falling profits at times may cause distress and uncertainty in the employees. Hence, the leader should respond to these concerns by offering support, comfort, and 4 being clear about the goals. Having determined the challenges of adaptation, the manager should in collaboration with the management team, work out and put in place the adaptive solutions. In conclusion, adaptive leadership gives leaders an understanding of the changing environment and how they should lead. Adaptive leadership involves the quality of being able to respond to changing situations and circumstances with flexibility. Through the principle of adaptive leadership, leaders are able to tackle and work out organizational problems like discovering how to reverse the profit loss for Petri Rabigh. This way of thinking will allow leaders to have wider views and within the challenges to identify the adaptive solutions that will foster positive change and resilience of the organization. 5 References Arab News.
